League Meetings

Winter Meeting Report

The annual Winter Meeting of the EFL was held at the Wood-Mar conference room at George Fox University on Dec. 27, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. The early start time was set to accommodate the need of this writer, whose family Christmas celebration started immediately following the meeting, and for this we were grateful.

The championship trophy was, um, not available at this time so there is no poignant photograph of its official presentation to the new league champion. The presentation was postponed to a later date.

Several awards were made, having been voted on by team owners within the league. Attractive certificates, suitable for framing, were handed to the recipients, whether they wanted them or not.

  • Deb of the Year: Jose Abreu, Peshastin
  • Most Notable Drafting Strategy: Peshastin (scary huge bid)
  • League MVP: Jose Abreu, Peshastin (top slugging, runs created and OPS)
  • Most Surprising Team: Pittsburgh (so far ahead of the rest of us)
  • Most Uneven Trade: Flint Hill trades Jose Altuve and Yan Gomes to Old Detroit for Dustin Pedroia and Derek Norris

Dave Votaw gave a shameless plug for the new EFL web site he’s been working on.

(Editor’s Note: The league also approved a revision of the rules clarifying the process that the Commissioner should follow each year to generate player defense ratings.  The main effect of the change is to make ratings at defensive positions expire if the player fails to appear at that position for two consecutive years.)

The draft finally got underway, and the following picks were made:

  • Josmil Pinto, by Canberra (from Cottage)
  • Jason Hammel, by Kaline (from Portland)
  • Matt Davidson, by Pittsburgh (from Cottage)
  • Daniel Hudson, by Canberra (from Old Detroit)
  • Tom Koehler, by Old Detroit (from Haviland)
  • Justin Williams, by Pittsburgh (from Peshastin)

Tentative dates were set for the following meetings:

  • Rookie Draft, February 21, 1:00 pm
  • Free Agent Draft, March 28, time TBD

And that was the meeting!
