Post-Apocalyptic Post Postponed

Yesterday’s post posited an apocalypse and promised a post-apocalyptic epilogue today. Apparently apocalypses are apathetic about appearing promptly for appointments. Please don’t be apoplectic — I apologize profusely for our postponed apocalypse.

Haviland: W, 9 – 2.  .333, .432, .500;  9 ip, 2 er.  Happy Edgar Martinez Day!  You can thank Jason Heyward’s  3 for 4 with a walk — sort of a sub-cycle, missing the homer but adding the walk. Clearly Dragons are untroubled by apocalyptic weather.  Why should they be?  Mountainsides ablaze and valleys choked with smoke is their idea of paradise.

Old Detroit: W 1, L 1; 11 – 4.  ,3o4 , .407, .478;  18.7 ip, 3 er.  Here’s why the apocalypse had to be put off:  it would have been Edgar Martinez Day in Old Detroit except for Byron Buxton’s 0 for 6.  But Buxton is only allocated at 40%, so in reality Old Detroit’s batting line would be more like .330, .437, .519, so perhaps you won’t mind if we have an informal edgar martinez day celebration here in Old Detroit.  If it makes you feel better, we’ll ignore Lance McCullers’ successful return to the big leagues (7 ip, 2 er) since he’s 100% inactive this month. We can get by with 11.7 ip, 1 er.

Pittsburgh: W, 14 – 3.  .378, .481, .822;  8 ip, 3 er.  Happy Edgar Martinez Day Plus!  This Stephen Piscotty guy is getting on my nerves: 3 for 4 with a homer and a walk.  Jose Altuve and Mike Trout also had 3 for 4’s, Trout’s coming with a homer, too. The great thing about Sunday was that the Wolverines staved off the blazing Mountains for one more day despite this huge offensive output.

Cottage:  W, 13  – 1.  .457, .513, .686;  15.3 ip, 2 er.  Happy Edgar Martinez Day Plus! The only Cheese hitters who did not put up at least an Edgarian line were Wilmer Flores (.333, .500, .333) and Jorge Soler (.000, .250, .000).   Aaron Nola and Kendall Graveman, those two legendary aces, combined for 14 scoreless innings.

Flint Hill:  W 2, L 0; 10 – 7.  .345, .333, .586.  Generally, if you want to have an Edgar Martinez Day, you need to walk some.  Toss in just 3 walks and you’d be all set.

Peshastin:  L, 4 – 8.  .243, .30o, .622;  15 ip, 16 er.  Oh, my, this is one of those days where you just want to avert your eyes.  All those earned runs — so unsightly.  We can empathize in Old Detroit, since we just went through a week like that.  But it’s also hard to look at the hitting — that big slugging percentage, a perfect element in what could have been an Edgar Martinez Day had the Pears only gotten, say, 3 more hits and 2 more walks.

Canberra: W, 6 – 4.  .250, .423, .500;  14.3 ip, 6 er.  Another near-miss on an Edgar Martinez Day.  One more hit would have done it. Transforming a walk into a hit would have done it.  I think they intentionally walked Jason Kipnis just to prevent him from giving the ‘Roos an EMD.

Kaline:  L, (-2) – 0.  .125, .173, .167;  15.3 ip, 7 er.  Wow. Not a whiff on Whidbey Island of Edgar yesterday.  Speaking of whiffs: hitters did that a lot, racking up 11 strikeouts.   On the other hand, Drive pitchers whiffed the opposition even more: 14 times. Any game that ends up with a total of -2 runs scored is not likely to see much excitement from the hitters.

Portland:  “W”, 4 – 5.  .268, .279, .390;  0.3 ip, 0 er.   Minimalist in their approach Sunday, the Rosebuds still squeezed out a “win” to close the gap with the Drive.  Jean Segura still likes to tweak the Wolverines’ noses occasionally, as he did going 2 for 4, something he was not prone to do for Old Detroit.

  • In case you were wondering whether yesterday was the first recorded day on which the entire EFL celebrated an Edgar Martinez Day, the answer is — not quite. Our compiled total raw MLB batting line went .292, .373, .519. A distinctly below average result for Edgar Martinez. Even telling Byron Buxton to go home wouldn’t have elevated us to EMD territory.
