2016 Salary Cap: YOU ARE FORBIDDEN TO READ THIS

YOU MAY NOT READ THE FOLLOWING POST.

THE ONLY  WAY YOU CAN READ THE FOLLOWING POST IS IF YOU PROMISE TO TAKE THE INFORMATION IN IT AS PROVISIONAL, NON-BINDING, AND TOTALLY UNRELIABLE.

DO YOU SOLEMNLY SWEAR (or affirm) THAT YOU WILL NOT RUSH OUT AND MAKE RASH DECISIONS BASED ON THE DELUSION THAT THIS POST HAS SOLID INFORMATION?

If you said yes, then you can read on.  But be careful!  At the first sign of enthusiasm, I’m taking this post away and you’ll never see it again.

BEGINNING OF THE FORBIDDEN POST:

Fangraphs is projecting that the median major league payroll on opening day will be about $126,000,000.  We set our salary caps at 75% of the median MLB opening day salary.  If Fangraphs is right, our salary cap would go up to $94,500,000.

The roster you submit just before Opening Day must fit under the current $87,500,000 cap.  But once the first pitch of the season is thrown, your cap will switch to the new figure. IF FANGRAPHS IS RIGHT, that would immediately make $7,000,000 available for use during the season.

We also increase our cap by $500,000 each month. So your resources could be as much as $95,000,000 at the end of April manager’s meeting.

I have no idea if Fangraphs is going to be right. I don’t recall them ever projecting Opening Day salaries before.  This could all be bogus.  PLEASE DO NOT SPEND EVERY LAST DIME OF YOUR SALARY CAP AT THE APRIL 2 DRAFT BASED ON THIS INFORMATION.

Unless you really want to.
