Mr. Answer Man Answers Out of the Whirlwind

NOTE TO READERS:  This is a copy of the email recently sent, EXCEPT it includes an 8th Thing You Cannot Do — be sure to note it.
Dear Mr. EFL Answer Man:
Final FH mid-month allocation: Bench Moncada and move 10% of Daniel Murphy from 1b to 3b. (Is that allowable within the rules? It does seem odd to only move a certain percentage of a player, but then again, I am allowed to allocate to different positions at the start of the month, right?)
Oh, and another thing: Forsythe to the DL, shift Murphy full time to 2b for remaining games, activate Jaso to the max at 1b, and Van Slyke to the max at OH.
This is all OK, right?

— A Veritable Whirlwind of Roster Management

Dear Whirlwind:

You are indeed allowed to allocate to different positions at the start of the month. You can redo your entire allocations then, as long as you only put players where they’re rated. However, we are not at the start of a month.  It’s only April 20.
Here’s a list of things you cannot do in the middle of a month:
1.  You’ve already made two moves in April.  You cannot make more than 3 roster moves in a single month. These instructions comprise at least three just by themselves.
2.  You cannot move a player from one defensive position to another. This has been our rule since the beginning of the (EFL fantasy) universe.  It may seem (in alphabetical order) anachronistic, arbitrary, archaic, and awful, but it is our rule. It is also defensible, since our primary playing time management tool is allocating a % of a person’s playing time for the entire month.  So when you move someone from 1b to 3b, you are going back in time to shift his performance where it suits you best, something no MLB manager can do. (I know it’s more complicated than this, and I’d be happy to discuss those complications in another place.)
So no, you can’t move Murphy from 1b to 3b.
3. You can’t move Murphy from 1b to 2b, either. You put him 100% at 1b. He can’t play any other position for you this month,
4.  You could demote Murphy to the minors.  As of the moment he’s demoted, he will earn no more stats for you for the rest of the month.  But 100% of the stats he DID earn already will be allocated to 1b.
5.  Once you’ve used your three roster moves, you can’t move anyone to the DL.  That’s a roster move. We eliminated the automatic right to DL your players DLed in MLB when we gave ourselves the 3 roster moves per month.  THink of it like soccer. You need to be careful with your roster moves because once you’ve used them, you run the risk of an injury.
6.  Assuming you had roster moves left, you could still activate Jaso to 1b if you want, but Murphy would still be playing there if he’s not in the minors. If you don’t like Murphy’s stats, activating Jaso would dilute Murphy’s stats somewhat, especially if the two of them exceed the maximum allowable plate appearances at 1b (about 4.5 per game, I forget the exact number).
7. Activating Van Slyke to OH can be done two ways.
a.  You can do it as a roster move of its own… if you have one of your three available; or
b.  You can do it as part of
(1) moving someone else from OH to a defensive position, or
(2)  sending someone else to the minors (deactivating him for the rest of the month).
In this case, Van Slyke would have to be moving to fill a hole creating by someone else who is leaving.  Either he would be replacing playing time (6.b.1) or filling a roster spot (6.b.2).
8.  You cannot leave yourself with an illegal roster. So you have to have 25 guys, 10 pitchers, and backups available on the active roster for every defensive position.
Given all this, I propose to delete your posted roster transactions and let you start over with.  You have only one roster move left this month, so use it carefully.

D.C. Balk 5 9 .332 6.7 60.8 86.3
Cottage:  W, 9 – 6. (.379, .419, .828;  5 ip 4 er).  Chris Archer stumbled, but Harper and Hicks combined to got 5 for 5 with a walk, a double, and three homers (1.000, 1.000, 3.000).  I have never seen a scarier foodstuff than these Cheese…
Peshastin: W, 7 – 4.  (.355, .459, .613; no pitching) … unless it’s these Pears, whose outfield of Hanniger, Kiermaier and Khris Davis went 8 for 11 with two doubles, three walks and a homer:  (.727, .786, 1.182 ).  So the Pears kept pace with the Cheese without a single pitcher.
Haviland:  L, 3 – 5. (.263, .333, .263;  7 ip, 4 er)
Kaline:  W 2, L (-1); 7 -(-3). (.324, .44, .514;  10.3 ip, 0 er). Wow ! The best day in the EFL! This is an explosive Drive team.  They myst be getting pretty excited in Kaline!
Pittsburgh: W, 4 – 4. (.261, .261, .435; no pitching)
Flint Hill: “L”,  6 – 5. (.360, .500, .480;  7.3 ip,  2 er).  Ah. Now I see why Flint Hill went a little crazy with the reallocations. Yesterday’s numbers for Jaso (currently allocated 33%): .667, .750, .667.  For Van Slyke ( 33%): .333, .333 , 1.333.  Also for Margot (69%: 1.000, 1.000, 1.000).
Canberra:  “L”, 4 – 3. (.257, .308, .371; 10.7 ip, 4 er).
Portland:  W (-1), L 2; 0 – 8.  (.195, .214, .220; no pitching).
Old Detroit: W, 5 – 0.  (.242, .278, .455;  11.3 ip, 1 er).  Three wins in a row for the Wolverines!  I am trying not to get too excited, but Bumgarner and Liriano both had good outings.  And Christian Yelich’s surgical precision in going 3 for 5 with a homer and still letting the Mariners win — that’s awesome.
DC:  W, 2 – 0.  (.188, .257, .250;  8.0 ip, 4 er).  A win and still a tumble to the cellar. This has to be frustrating.
