On Gifts

Ryan and I had a long telephone debate Sunday evening about which games count if you are looking for a Father’s Day present in EFL results.  I took the position that Saturday’s game mattered, because the present would be received and unwrapped when I posted the results on Sunday.

Ryan was dissatisfied with that result because I grumbled about how his present consisted of the Kangaroos turning the Wolverines into road kill. Sure I was proud of him and all, but I didn’t like it any better than Sam beating me at par-3 golf Sunday afternoon, for the first time in his life.

Ryan, sensing perhaps that his present was falling a little flat, insisted that the baseball results PRODUCED on Father’s Day are the real present.  I told him how this was ridiculous. Who ever tells their dad “Happy Father’s Day, Dad!  Your new tie is being produced today by workers in Hyderabad!”

And besides, the law requires delivery with donative intent AND acceptance for there to be a gift. The gift isn’t given until it is accepted.  You don’t give someone something by mailing it to him, or leaving it on the porch, or even by holding it out to him and saying “Take it! It’s yours! Happy Fathers Day, Third Place Dad!” If that was the point at which the gift took place, you could impose title to property on unwilling owners.

And anyway, even if we did take Ryan’s view of gifts, it doesn’t help any.  He just dished up more of the same in today’s update.

.
Portland: L, 7 – 9. (.298, .339, .536;  9.7 ip, 9 er). Seven Rosebuds OPSed 1.000 or more, led by Teascar Hernandez’s 3 for 4 with a homer and a HBP.  But Jon Gray’s 5 ip, 5 er outing set the tone for an ugly day on the Rosebud mound.
.
Canberra:  W, 9 – 3. (.405, .450, 1.018; 1.3 ip, 0 er).  The Kangaroos also produced 7 supra 1.000 OPSes. The ‘Roos avoided any risk of a pitching meltdown by only attempting 1.3 innings from Seranthony Dominguez.
.
Old Detroit: L, 3 – 4.  (.211, .302, .289; 15 ip, 6 er) The Wolverines didn’t produce much offense, other than on-the-bubble-in-the-crowded-Nationals-outfield Michael Taylor who went 3 for 4. He also stole 4 bases without getting caught, which, it turns out, doesn’t help as much as you might think. Unless it convinces the Nationals to keep him playing in their outfield.
.
Brookland: L, 5 – 9. (.256, .370, .538;  5.7 ip, 4 er). Ex-Wolverine Gregory Polanco went off Sunday: 3 for 3 with a double, a homer and a walk. Jake Odorizzi unfortunately went off in a different way: slouching off to bedlam after giving up 4 earned runs in 5 innings.
.
Flint Hill: L, 5 – 6. (.297, .413, .541; 4.3 ip, 5 er). It was bullpen day Sunday in Kansas.  Six Tornados took the mound, not one of them lasting longer than one inning.  Matt Barnes, Archie Bradley and Tanner Scott combined for 2.3 scoreless innings. But Tornado fans had to endure watching Corey Knebel give up a run in his inning, surpassed by Brad Hand delivering a triple chulk (0.7 ip,, 2 er) and Blake Parker capping things off with a sextuple chulk:  two runs in only 1/3 of an inning. At that point the Tornados called it a day.
.
Cottage: W, 10 – 2. (.414, .541, .759;  2.7 ip, 0 er) That 1.299 team OPS is one of the highest of the year for a team with enough plate appearances to meet the minimum requirements for a game.  Eric Thames led the way with two homers and a walk in five plate appearances.  He also stole a base.  Mike Trout backed him up with 2 for 2 with 2 walks.
.
Pittsburgh: W, 7 – 3. (.268, .375, .610; 1 ip, 0 er). Like the Cheese, the Alleghenys emphasized offense Sunday.  Nick Castellanos continued on his tear by homering. Tyler Flowers, Maikel Franco, and Jurickson Profar also homered.
.
Haviland: W, 2 – 1.  (.250, .250, .389; 87 ip. 1 er).  Brandon Nimmo anchored the offense (2 for 5 with a double and a homer), while Clay Buchholz pitched somewhere down a dark and lonely road, going 5.7 innings and allowing only 1 earned run.
.
Kaline: L, 1 – 10. (.194, .231, .222; 6.3 ip, 7 er).  Chase Anderson got chased (5.3 ip, 6 er). Drive batters were far nicer to the pitchers they faced, causing them almost no offense whatsoever (7 for 36 with a double and a walk).
.
Peshastin: W, 5 – 0. (.296, .387, .407; 7.3 ip, 0 er).  Jack Flaherty pitched 5 brilliant innings, and  newly-acquired Jacoby Jones led the robust Pear offense with his 2 for 3 day.
.
DC: L, 5 – 9. (.250, .349, .278; 17.3 ip 14 er).  Brilliant Balkan management’s insightful allocations helped the team produce almost 5 runs out of barely-better-than replacement raw materials. The pitching proved resistant to miraculous management, since all three starters stank (Bundy: 6 ip, 4 er; Mengden: 5.7 ip, 4 er; Musgrove: 4.3 ip, 6 er).
