Thursday report: late but maybe worth it

I know these Thursday results are late — all the Friday games are over except the Baltimore v. Atlanta 15-inning marathon. But today we woke up to watch Costa Rica come oh-so-close to shocking Brazil with a tie.  Then we went hiking on Arenal Volcano, eating in La Fortuna, plus souvenir shopping — we got back to our hotel exhausted.  I took a nap, and then fell asleep preparing the late, skinny update.  I am sleeping tonight on the balcony porch of our hotel room listening to a riot of nocturnal sounds coming from the manicured grounds of our resort and the jungle just outside the fence.  Just in the last ten minutes some sort of insecct choir has set up a high-pitched piercing buzz that will drive me indoors soon if it doesn’t quit.

But what is all that to you?  You want some standings.  Here are some standings — and just now the insect buzz choir suddenly quit! And started up again before I could finish the sentence,,,

Portland: W, 7 – 3. (39 PA, .297, .332, .514; 7 ip, 2 er) A fine, front-runner quality day, with new deb Austin Meadows leading the offense (3 for 4) and Kevin Gausman doing most of the pitching (6 ip, 2 er).

.

Old Detroit:  W 2, L (-1); 3 – (-2). (34 PA, .156, .206, .250; 22 ip, 2 er).  The Wolverines gained 0.3 games despite the Rosebuds’ good day and the W’s weak hitting because Madison Bumgarner, Rick Porcello, and Max Scherzer combined for 22 ip and only 2 earned runs.                        .

.

Canberra: DNP; 1 – 3.  (15 PA, .385, .467, .462; 6.7 ip, 5 er).  Awesome but thin offense coudn’t overcome 6.7 disappointing innings from Kangaroo hurlers.

.

Brookland: W 1, L 2; 13 – 16 (20 PA, .063; .238, .125; 9.3 ip, 4 er). Zack Godley pitched six solid innings (6 ip, 2er) to give his team a chance for a win — but the Outs were overwhelmed by opposing pitchers and thin turnout.

.

Flint Hill: W, 5 – 2. (24 PA, .261, .292, .478;  7 ip, 1 er)  Tyson Ross continued his remarkable comeback season another great start,

Pittsburgh: W 1, L (-1); 0 – 0. (12 PA, .364, .417, .545 — a very skinny Edgar Martines Day!; no pitching)

Kaline: DNP; 2 – 1. (.250, .432, .607; 6 ip, 4 er). James Paxton, demoralized by news of his impending trade, struggled through 5 innings with 4 earned runs allowed.   Fellow Drive Aaron Judge  hit one of the two homers Paxton allowed.

Haviland: W (-1), L 1; 0 – 4. (29 PA, .280, .367, .640;  4 ip, 5 er). Carlos Martinez struggled for 4 innings, surrendering 5 earned runs.  Bryce Harper, apparently studying Mike Trout:  1 for 1 with a double and 2 walks Thursday.

DC: DNP; 0 – 0. (245 PA, .273, .333, .591; no pitching). Kole Kalhoun homered and walked to lead the Balks in leap-frogging the Pears.

Peshastin:  ‘W’, 5 – 8. (13 PA, .250, .308, .333;  no pitching). Only three Pears showed up to play — all hitters. One of them only showed up.  The other two played well (Javier Baez:
