League Updates

From first to last, and then on to latest

NOTE 1:  Here is an interesting event I’d love to attend with some EFL members.

Vintage Base Ball

Sep 9, 2018 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Cheer on the local McMinnville Gristmillers as they play a good O’l fashioned exhibition vintage Base Ball game.

Free – donations gladly accepted.

Did you notice they feature a genuine Detroit Wolverine on the flyer?  That’s Deacon White, who played mostly third base for the Wolverines in the last three years of their 8 year existence (1881-88). Those were also the last good three years of White’s Hall of Fame career.  The new Old Detroit Wolverines are in their 15th year of operation. The original Wolverines only won one league championship. The new Old Detroit Wolverines have won 4, and are still in first place (barely) in the race for their 5th.

.

I admit I don’t know for sure that the game will be worth watching. But there are root beer floats and hot dogs, so the trip is sure not to be wasted.

NOTE 2. From the first to the last:  A quiz!  Deacon White is described on the flyer as being the first batter in the first professional baseball game on May 4, 1871.  Baseball Reference repeats the claim, saying he is the first professional player in major league baseball history.  But wouldn’t there have been 10 players appearing in that game the instant the first pitch was thrown – the batter and all 9 members of the defense?  White couldn’t have played by himself.  What makes the batter the first player?

.

But that’s not the quiz!  Here it is:  White was player number 1 to make his major league debut.  The most recent MLB debut was yesterday: Ryan Burr, pitching in relief for the White Sox to finish up their 7 – 2 loss to the Tigers.  Within 500, how many players have now debuted in MLB?

WARNING: DO NOT CHEAT!! Don’t look this up. Don’t get help from anyone.

Your answer:  Ryan Burr is the _________th player to debut in MLB.

Old Detroit:  W, 8 – 3. (27 PA, .304, .407, .565; 21 ip, 7 er, 3.00 ERA).
Portland: DNP, (-1) – (1). (25 PA, .292, .320, .417; 0.7 ip, 2 er, 27.00 ERA ).
The W’s put 0.6 game back onto the cushion over the Rosebuds with a great day at the plate and some strong pitching from Madison Bumgarner (8 ip, 1 er) and Max Scherzer (7 ip, 2 er) plus a minor bust by Anthony DeSclafani (6 ip, 4 er). Kirby Yates slowed his Rosebuds’ progress with his sextuple chulk.
Brookland: “L”, 7 – 4. (16 PA, .313. .421, .500; no pitching)
Pittsburgh: W 2, L (-1); 8 – (-2). (30 PA .292, .433, .500; 8 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA).
Canberra: L, 1 – 4. (32 PA, .188, .188, .281; 6 IP, 2 ER, 3.00 ERA).
Flint Hill: L, 4 – 9. (13 PA, .417. .462, .417; 5 ip, 5 er, 9.00 ERA).
Cottage: L, 1 – 6. (29 PA, .142, .172, .286; 6 ip, 3 er, 4.50 ERA)
Kaline: DNP, (-1) – 0. (18 PA, .214, .333, .857; no pitching).  All three of the Drive’s hits were homers: Ian Desmond, Todd Frazier, and Hunter Renfroe.
Haviland:  W 1, L (-1); 5 – (-6). (16 PA, .063, .063, .o63; 13 ip, 3 er, 2.08 ERA)  Haviland did much better than this miniscule batting line because they suddenly got credit for Jeff McNeil’s work this month.  McNeil had the W’s only hit Thursday – a single single — but he’s hitting .346, .369, .494 over 85 PA this month. But even better was the superb work of Sean Newcomb (6 ip, 0 er), the main ingredient in the Dragons’ good pitching day.
.
Peshastin:  DNP, 0 – 0. (16 PA, .267, .313, .533; no pitching).
DC: “W”, 5 – 6. (38 PA, .258, .395, .323; 1.3 ip. 2 er).

    • showing my work:

I did a rough estimation of how many players debut every year, got about 26k and that felt low so I added 5k and some random numbers.

Having looked it up, I feel confident someone can do better.
