  • Thanks, Ron, for your kind mention. I’ll post a little note that you all are the best audience for. Dad was a lifelong Cardinals fan. He grew up in rural Nebraska, in reach of the mighty radio network of the Cardinals. He was a teenager in the ’40s, a decade of several Cardinals World Series. He loved Stan Musial and Bob Gibson. I remember him telling me at quite a young age about Enos Slaughter scoring from first base on a hit to the outfield to win game 7 of the 1946 World Series.

He was unquestionably responsible for me being a baseball fan. And more specifically, I well remember the day I came home from school at age 8 in 1960, and him telling me about the fantastic game 7 of the World Series, won by a ninth-inning homer by Bill Mazeroski. Living in rural Kansas, he turned me into a lifelong Pirates fan that day even though I never was in the state of Pennsylvania until my 50s.

He was a great Dad in far more important ways, too.

    • Thanks, Mark. I wonder if he regretted making you go to school that day.

The single event in baseball I would have liked most to see was Kirk Gibson’s home run against Dennis Eckersley in game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Even so, I don’t regret it. My daughter Melissa has a master’s degree in drama, and a teaching career a large part of which has been directing plays. When my time comes, maybe Melissa will write a brief tribute citing the evening when she was 8 when her dad took her to a community theater presentation of Peter Pan, and missed watching Gibson’s homer.
