Life Together

Yesterday my office phone rang. I answered and heard my colleague’s request: “There’s a pastor from Connecticut on the line. He wants to talk with a campus pastor about Javier’s service tomorrow.”

“Sure, I’d be happy to talk with him. Send him through,” I replied.

I knew Javier had grown up on the East coast, but I wasn’t sure why a pastor from CT would be calling our office.

“Hello, my name is Rob, and I was a good friend of Javier’s when we were younger,” stated the voice on the other line. There were some vocal quivers as he spoke, and I could tell he was on the verge of tears, trying to hold them back as he talked with me.

After making sure Rob was finished with his introduction, I said, “Rob, I am so sorry for your loss. We are heartbroken here at George Fox, and I know there are so many around the world who feel the same.”

Our conversation then turned to all of the ways we had seen Javier live his life with adventure, intentionality, and love. Rob recounted surfing trips, bible studies, and Javier’s academic journey that took him to places like Georgetown and Cambridge in pursuit of his degrees. I recounted how so many students saw his as a “teacher-dad,” someone who could get the most out of them intellectually and also affirm their value and dignity as children of God. It was cathartic for both of us to speak about his impact on us and our communities.

The conversation then turned to Rob and I learning more about one another, and we quickly realized that not only were we connected through our friend Javier, but we were also connected through our graduate work at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. It was during this point in the conversation that a truly beautiful thing occurred.

“Tell me about the church you pastor,” I said to him. “It’s a church in New Canaan, CT that my father planted and where I serve as the youth pastor,” he replied.

“New Canaan? That’s a beautiful part of the country,” I offered.

Rob paused, and then offered, “You seem to know New England pretty well for only being out here two years.”

“Yes, after graduate school I worked at Gordon College for several years and we spent a lot of time travelling throughout New England, knowing we would not likely live on the East coast again.”

“Gordon College – are you serious?” said Rob. “I was a student there from 2005-2009!”

“Are you kidding? That’s when I was employed there!”

Though there are times in life that cannot be explained by anything other than chance, this was not one of those moments. This was a moment so clearly orchestrated by God, I was left in awe at how, even in tragedy, God is at work in all things.

“What is your last name?” I asked, knowing that from 2003-2005 I worked as Gordon’s admissions counselor for students from Connecticut.

“Knecthle,” he said. And there it was. The gift delivered by God, given to each of us in a time of need.

“I was your admissions counselor, Rob. I came to your high school and talked with you. I spent time on the phone with you. I knew you as a high school student!” We both laughed, and he said, “If it wasn’t for you, I would never have come to Gordon. I didn’t even know it existed until you reached out to me. Thank you.”

Rob caught a flight last night from Connecticut so he can attend Javier’s service today. When he called, he wasn’t sure he was going to come. The timing seemed challenging, the turnaround too quick, the possibility of not being able to see the family, or the fear that Covid limitations would render his trip futile seemed too great. He needed to hear from someone that he should come, that he would be welcome here.

Javier’s scholarly work centered on the person and work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. How fitting it is then, that even in his death, two people are experiencing “life together” – the name of Bonhoeffer’s most popular writing, and also the legacy Javier has left to us, his friends.

So may all we do and say be in pursuit of life together, for it is through all things – even fantasy baseball – that we can get tastes of heaven, which Rob and I experienced yesterday on the phone, and which Javier is now experiencing in its fullness for eternity.

A small hole has been detected in the Old Detroit sails, giving a glimmer of hope to those hoping to catch up this swiftly moving ship. Rafael Devers and Tommy Edman did their best, or nearly so, in order to procure a win combining to go 4 for 9 with 2 doubles. But one pitchers wasn’t able to get out of a sticky spot – Jonathan Loaisiga coughed up 4 runs in 2/3 of an inning. More concerning is that in addition to Byron Buxton’s return to the IL with a fractured hand, Marcus Stroman left his start last night after one inning due to “left hip soreness.” The Wolverines have been able to manage injuries very well this season, so these may have no impact on the race. Then again, Kaline may have something to say about that!

Six Drive batters collected two hits on the day, and they hit as many home runs (4) as walks they earned (4). Jonathan Schoop continued his hot-hitting ways, going 2 for 4 with a home run.

Kaline: W, 9-5; 55PA, 2.3IP
AVG: 0.340 OBP: 0.400 SLG: 0.640 OPS: 1.040
ERA: 3.91 WHIP: 0.870
The Drive did was has been nearly impossible this entire month – they made up some ground on the Wolverines, getting within 4.4 games with one week left in the month.  Their move was due to excellent hitting and just enough decent pitching to get a win. Six Drive batters collected two hits on the day, and they hit as many home runs (4) as walks they earned (4). Jonathan Schoop continued his hot-hitting ways, going 2 for 4 with a home run. Perhaps the Drive players will be able to shed, for a week, their owner’s happiness with .500 play and make a push for the top. How exciting would that be for the entire EFL?

Peshastin: 5-(-5); 41PA, 13IP
AVG: 0.270 OBP: 0.341 SLG: 0.324 OPS: 0.666
ERA: 0.69 WHIP: 1.077
That OPS might look evil, but that ERA is divine! Pear pitchers delivered enough excellence to erase 5 runs from their team total, a miracle, no doubt. The two starters, Blake Snell and Freddy Peralta, combined for 11 innings and 0 earned runs. Only Yimi Garcia had a blemished line, giving up one run in one innings. The Pears had as many stolen bases as they had walks (4 each), and they collected 10 hits, though most of them singles besides one double each from Victor Robles and Willie Calhoun. The Pears climbed into third while gaining 1.3 games on the Wolverines, and now sit 5.1 games back of first place.

DC: W, 14-12; 29PA, 2IP
AVG: 0.370 OBP: 0.414 SLG: 0.926 OPS: 1.340
ERA: 18.00 WHIP: 2.000
The Balk played football yesterday, though their opponent only collected 4 field goals and so DC won. Balk hitters collected 10 total hits, and 5 of them were home runs. Xander Bogaerts collected the most hits (3), but he was not one of the home run hitters. Were it not for Garrett Crochet and his 4 runs allowed without recording an out, the Balk line would have been incredible. Even still, they managed to gain .2 games on the Wolverines.

Flint Hill: W, 6-5; 51PA, 4IP
AVG: 0.279 OBP: 0.373 SLG: 0.419 OPS: 0.791
ERA: 6.75 WHIP: 2.250
The Tornadoes barely won yesterday, but a win is a win! Tyler Naquin was the star of the day, going 4 for 4 with a home run and walk. Sean Murphy added two of his own hits, including a double, and Brad Miller collected 3 walks and no hits. 5 different relievers appeared, and 3 of them gave up one run, which isn’t great, but it was good enough to get the Tornadoes back within 5.7 games of the Wolverines.

Haviland: W, 9-5; 49PA, 4.7IP
AVG: 0.340 OBP: 0.367 SLG: 0.596 OPS: 0.963
ERA: 3.83 WHIP: 1.277
The Dragons had a good day, stopping their recent run of poor playing. The hitting was excellent, if not quite on the level of Edgar Martinez. Nelson Cruz and Ramon Laureano both collected three hits, including a double for Cruz and a home run for Laureano. Four other hitters collected 2 hits apiece, for a team total of 16 hits on the day. Tarik Skubal was the only pitcher to appear, and he made it 4.2 innings, giving up 2 earned runs. The Dragons managed to gain .6 games on the Wolverines – was it enough to give them hope that maybe all is not lost this season?

Canberra: W, 4-0; 21PA, 10IP
AVG: 0.250 OBP: 0.286 SLG: 0.450 OPS: 0.736
ERA: 0.90 WHIP: 0.600
Shutouts in the EFL are rare, so we need to stop for a moment and marvel at this one…

Canberra’s pitching led the way, and it didn’t matter that Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. continued to rake (2 for 4) or that Mauricio Dubon went 2 for 4 with a home run. But it certainly helped! Chris Flexen tossed 6.7 innings, giving up one run, and Collin McHugh added another three scoreless innings. The Roos were able to get under the 10 games back threshold, and are now knocking on the door of being under 9 games out of first.

Cottage: L, 2-7; 47PA, 6IP
AVG: 0.220 OBP: 0.319 SLG: 0.268 OPS: 0.587
ERA: 7.50 WHIP: 1.667
It wasn’t a great day in Cottage yesterday. Andrew Heaney threw 6 innings, giving up 5 runs. That performance created a bit of a hole from which the hitters were unable to climb out. For the hitters, if they played for Rays they had a good day – everyone else? Not so much. The Rays hitters (Randy Arozarena, Yandy Diaz and Francisco Mejia) combined to go 7 for 14, with one double. The rest of the team only collected 2 total hits. The Cheese were one of two teams (the Rosebuds being the others) who lost ground to Old Detroit.

Pittsburgh: L, 1-4; 37PA, 8.7IP
AVG: 0.094 OBP: 0.216 SLG: 0.281 OPS: 0.497
ERA: 4.14 WHIP: 1.149
The Alleghenys had a rotten day, but surprisingly did not lost any ground to the Wolverines. Th pitching wasn’t too rotten, with Tyler Anderson being the main culprit. He gave up 3 runs in 6.7 innings pitched, a line that will often result in a win. But the hitting was essentially non-existent, with 3 hits collected in those 37 plate appearances. And 2 of them were from one guy, Dansby Swanson. Two of their three hits were home runs, though, so that is a silver lining. Apparently Trevor Larnach is reaping the most benefit from Buxton’s inability to stay healthy, swatting a home run last night.

Bellingham: W(2), L(-1), 6-(-3); 30PA, 15IP
AVG: 0.250 OBP: 0.300 SLG: 0.643 OPS: 0.943
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 0.533
The Cascades had an excellent day! On the hitting side, they were led by Rhys Hoskins and DJ Lemahieu, who combined for 4 hits in 9 at bats, including a home run for each. But it was the pitching that really shined. Anthony DeSclafani and Charlie Morton both went 7 innings each, neither of them giving up any runs, striking out a total of 20 batters. The Cascades gained 1.5 games in the standings and are on the move!

Portland: L, 5-6; 38PA, 2IP
AVG: 0.219 OBP: 0.342 SLG: 0.500 OPS: 0.842
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 0.500
The win for the Rosebuds was a close game, even though they lost. And pitching that held up really well in light of recent performances. Those five runs were largely the product of three home runs (Ryan Jeffers, Max Kepler and CJ Cron all had one each). Two pitchers appeared and didn’t give up a run.

  • Jamie,
I’ve only come to know Javier through the stories people have told about him the last few days. I can feel from them why he will be deeply missed. Thank you for your story, The EFL is one of the ways I experience Life Together.
