The Finger Lakes of Upstate New York

On Wednesday Craig had to be elsewhere, but Judy took us to several different places around the Finger Lakes Wine Country. The weather wasn’t very good, but we didn’t let that stop us – we had a wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful area.

On Wednesday, Judy took us on some easy hikes through forested areas with streams and waterfalls. She even brought big umbrellas to keep us (relatively) dry! My favorite was Watkins Glen – a deep gorge with paved paths at several levels. We walked beside and behind several waterfalls there. Ithaca Falls (above) is the showpiece of the region – a huge, beautiful waterfall that is not far from the road.

We took in a few other sights around the Finger Lakes – the Atwater Estate Vineyards, right on the shore of Seneca Lake, and Taughannock Falls (which you can see pictured at the top of this page). We lunched at a fabulous bakery in downtown Ithaca, and even had some ice cream (out of season!) near the end of the day. It was a fun and beautiful day, and Judy is a terrific tour guide.

We saw some of the best fall colors of our whole trip on this day, our last in upstate New York. (Click pictures to see them at higher resolution.) On Thursday morning we said goodbye to Craig and Judy, and boarded Amtrak for the 5-hour journey to New York City.
