Grandma (Mildred Stout Votaw) was a preacher’s kid. Her father was Lewis E. Stout, a well-known and well-loved Friends minister. He was the most well-known of any member of our family, if the number of newspaper articles that were published at his death (see below) are any indication.
When Dick was born in 1928, he was named “Lewis Richard” after his grandfather. Lewis was his only grandparent, and he was Lewis’ only grandchild. So they had a special relationship. Lewis passed away in 1935 when Dick was just 7 years old.
Lewis served as a pastor for 45 years, leading 12 different churches. He had two funerals on the same day in two Indiana towns, Plainfield and New London. The account of these services is in a PDF file that can be downloaded from this page. It includes a short biography, and it’s well worth reading.
The above news clipping (click on it to enlarge it) is Lewis’ obituary. It contains the following description of Lewis Stout:
“Lewis Stout was a staunch promoter of the Faith, ever honoring Jesus Christ and the sufficiency of His atoning sacrifice for the sins of the people. He was mighty in the scriptures, having many portions stored in his memory. He was a lover of music and gave great encouragement to its place in public worship. In so many ways he was a man who filled humbly more than an ordinary place in the home, community, and church.”
