Remembering Anna Stout

Lewis Stout's first wife, and the mother of 3 daughters – Gertrude, Tirzah, and Mildred – was a wonderful person.

Tribute to Anna Stout, p. 2

There are not very many documents and pictures of Anna Stout in our archive. Her husband, Lewis E. Stout, was such a well-known pastor and had such an effective ministry that Anna sort of fades into the background.

But reading the tribute (below) and the newspaper articles about her, that were written just after her death, gives us a good idea of the character and personality of my great-grandmother. She was obviously much-loved and highly influential in ministry.

If more information about Anna is found, it will be added here; in the meantime, please read the tribute, below, which was written for her memorial.

Dearest Dicky,

Dicky today is your Grandmama’s birthday. As I think of her today I can see her in a nice white blouse with a black silk skirt – with her hair curled (I used to curl it when she dressed up) – she looked so pretty.

Dick she had the bluest eyes. They were the same shad of the sky. I used to kid her about her beautiful eyes – and Dick they were the kindest eyes. I could tell exactly how she felt by her eyes.

I want you to always think of her as the sweetest and unselfish Grandmama that ever lived. She was never too tired to do anything for Mother – always spoiling me with every whim she could. My most sincere prayer is that I can be half the Mother to you.

All my love,
Mother

Above is a portion of a letter sent by Mildred Votaw to her son, Dick, in 1934, a few weeks before his sixth birthday. The occasion was the remembrance of Mildred’s mother’s (Anna’s) birthday. Dick, of course, never knew his grandmother, but his mother wanted him to remember her on the anniversary of her birthday.
