This photo appears on a post card, but nothing is written on the back. We see the date, February 1909, on the front.

Here Herbert proudly displays two fish that he has caught! The note on the back of this picture says that it was taken in August, 1914, in Pomona, by Miss Nettie Smith.

This photo documents Herb’s Doctor of Dentistry degree, received from the University of Southern California in 1925. The three stripes on the sleeve signify a doctoral degree.

A few weeks after his sixth birthday, Herbert’s parents moved to Pomona from Los Angeles. His father set up a new osteopathic practice there, and his mother stopped her medical practice. They joined the local Congregational church, in which Herb continued as a member as long as he lived in Pomona. My parents were married in this church.

Herbert (whom we never heard called by that name; our grandmother called him ‘Herb’) spent the rest of his childhood in Pomona. His parents (who always called him ‘Herbert’ in their writings) continued their meticulous record-keeping of his childhood facts and events, at times “TMI”. Herbert’s log book from birth to age 5 is on this page; most of the rest of it is transcribed below.

Biographical Outline

Sept. 16 – Herbert enrolled for the fall term at the Norwood School, Kindergarten Dept. Mrs. Millspaugh, principal; Miss Colburn, assistant teacher.
Nov. 24 – Herbert’s first experience as a “public speaker.” At the Universalist Sunday school the infant class of two boys and four girls (Herbert being the youngest member) was on the program for the Thanksgiving festivities. Each child recited a short verse, they all joined in a final verse. Herbert was prepared to “say his speech.” No “stage fright” noticeable.
June 28, 1908 – Six years old. Weighs 39 pounds. Height, 42 1/2 inches.
Sept. 21 – Herbert moved with his parents from Los Angeles to their new home at Pomona, Calif., today
February 25, 1909 – Herbert’s first “blouse suit.”
June 28 – Seven years old today. Herbert celebrated by inviting some of his little friends to his Birthday Picnic at Ganesha Park (Pomona), where a luncheon was spread under the trees.
Sept. 20 – Herbert entered school today (Central Graded School, at Holt and Park Avenues, Pomona), first grade. Miss Benham, teacher.
Dec. 25 – Herbert’s first “truly” trousers with suspenders.
June 28, 1910 – 8 yrs. old. Birthday picnic, Ganesha Park; about a dozen girls and boys present; 8 candles on the cake, ice cream, etc., etc. Weight 47 1/2 lbs. Height (barefoot) 46 1/2 inches. Herbert received a bicycle from his cousins at Peoria, Ill – a “Crescent” wheel which had been ridden by Ethel and Clifford Drury, and outgrown by them; good as new now. The lad learned to ride in a few hours.
October – Herbert has learned to whistle, after his 8th birthday
February, 1911 – Herbert promoted to a second grade, Central School, Pomona, thereby earning a watch & chain; the former a nickel one and the latter of solid silver. The chain was given by his grandfather Albert W. Martin to his father, many years ago.
June 28 – Herbert weighs 51 lbs. Height, 49 1/2 ins. Celebrated his Ninth birthday today, with his father & mother, at Long Beach.
June 17, 1912 – Herbert was today asked to work in the stationery store of R.O. Ayres, until July 4, to sell fireworks, etc. The boy is anxious to earn money. The novelty of it appeals to him, and so his pater & mater consented. This is his first “job”, excepting of course many paid-for errands about home. Mr. A. pays the young salesman 25¢ per day.
July 9 – Herbert began piano lessons – Mrs. Arthur Plecher, teacher, at Main St. & Monterey Ave. Pomona. 2 half-hour lessons weekly, 75¢ per week. Practices 1/2 hour daily on Mrs. P’s piano; for use of instrument ___ per week.
Sept. 23 – Central School opens today. Herbert registered in 4th grade.
Dec. 3 – Falling backward while on roller skates, Herbert dislocated his right wrist joint and sustained a “green-stick” fracture on the right radius (lower third of bone). His father & mother reduced the dislocation before swelling ensued; they had an examination made by x-ray to determine nature of the break; then reduced fracture and applied splint.
Dec. 29 – Removed splint and bandage from Herbert’s right arm. For past 10 days have been removing splint every 48 hours in order to manipulate arm for stimulation of circulation. Today left off splint, but kept arm in loose sling for 2 days more.
Dec. 31 – Gave Herbert free use of arm today, just 4 weeks from day of accident. Apparently a good recovery; evidence of some callus remaining at point of union of bones. Recovery from dislocated wrist seems complete.
January 30, 1913 – Returned the patent splint to Dr. Wallace, and mailed to him a check for $5. [Dr. W. Had refused to make any charge whatever for his services in Herbert’s case.]
June 28 – Herbert 11 years old today. Weighs 68 lbs. 54 inches tall. Dr. Jessie B. Johnson of Youngstown O. sent H. a combination compass & magnifying glass.
March 31, 1914 – Measles. Herbert “broke out” today. In bed 3 days. Kept eyes shaded. Course of disease uneventful.
July 17 – Dental work. Herbert’s teeth in the upper jaw so much crowded that the canines are crowded forward against his lip, and forcing the two lateral incisors backward out of line, thus producing a deformity and making poor articulation with the lower teeth. Today Dr. S.W. Clapp, dentist, removed the two lateral incisors, thus allowing room for the two canines to be manipulated into line. Fee, $2. Dentist used a local anesthetic, composed in part of cocaine (1/2 of 1 percent).
Oct. 9 – Herbert became a member of the “Boys’ Brigade” of the Pilgrim Cong’l Church, Pomona, Calif.; an organization of Sunday school boys 12 to 17 years old; Military features; gun drills, etc.; wear yellow khaki uniform.

March 15 – By order of Dr. Holmes, health offices, all unvaccinated children are excluded from Central & Garey graded schools and the High School because there are in those school districts 2 cases of smallpox. Consequently Herbert is out of school today because his parents will not permit him to be vaccinated.
March 16 – Unvaccinated pupils ordered to report at Lincoln School. [Query: Why is it safer for the unvaccinated to attend one school than another?] Consequently Herbert is temporarily attending Lincoln School cor. 6th & Park.
April 14 – Herbert weighs 91 1/2 lbs – is 59 1/2 inches tall. On this day Herbert accompanied his father to Los Angeles where they witnessed a baseball game at Washington Park, between the “Angels” (L.A. team) and the “Seals” (San Francisco club). Score 5 to 1 in favor of Los Angeles.
June 29 – Herbert went into camp at Coronado Tent City (San Diego) with his company of the Boys’ Brigade of Pilgrim Cong’l Church, for eight days. 4 boys sleep in a tent. Herbert’s father & mother visited their cousins, Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Pierce, in San Diego while the boys were in camp. H. accompanied his parents to the Panama California Exposition July 3, staying for night fireworks, and again July 5, on which day the Brigade visited the Exposition in a body, and H. then joined his company and that evening returned with the Brigade to camp. About 200 boys in camp from various towns.

Sept. 28, 1923 – Third year at U.S.C. Dental College
June 18, 1925 – graduated from Dental College of University of Southern California. Took State Board Ex. June 13-20.

This portrait was taken on Herbert’s 9th birthday, June 28, 1911 – the same date as the portrait at the top of this page. We’ve never seen that hat since.

Here is the house where Herbert grew up in Pomona. He is shown standing on the porch with his parents.

This portrait is not annotated, but it appears to have been taken when Herb was in high school. The remarkable thing about it is its similarity to a photo of my other grandfather, Harold Votaw, taken at about the same age, or perhaps a little older. It must be the hair style.

Herb’s undergraduate degree was not noted in his parents’ log book; I don’t know if he got a bachelor’s degree before or during dental school. If so, this may be a picture taken at the time of that event. Alternatively, it could be a high school graduation portrait.
