The two couples were close friends.

Harold and Frank pose for a photo on the steps.

Tirzah and Mildred pose together.

Frank & Tirzah look as if they’ve just come home from church. She is wearing an impressive hat.

Despite the significant difference in their ages (the sisters were born 13 years apart) the Votaws and the Jessups were close friends. Harold and Mildred lived in the town of Plainfield, Indiana, in the house that Mildred’s father had given them when they married; Frank & Tirzah lived on a farm outside of that same town.

It looks like Frank got a new car! The license plate says it’s a model from 1927, the year after Harold & Mildred’s wedding. This picture, with the two couples and the Jessup’s dog, appears to have been taken on the farm.

In this picture Mildred stands with her father, Lewis Stout, in front of the home that Lewis had built in Plainfield. This was to be Lewis and Anna’s retirement home, but Anna passed away and never got the chance to live in it. So Lewis gave it to Mildred and Harold, and it became their first home after they were married.

Here are Howard Votaw, Harold’s younger brother, and Floyd Votaw, their cousin. Floyd was the son of Harold’s uncle Merritt Votaw.

Another photo taken at the farm. It looks like the two couples have just come from church, because they’re all dressed up. I’m not sure what that object on the left (behind the dog) is – some sort of sharpening tool?

Harold wrote on the back of this one:

Tirzah and Midge
don’t look like sisters do they?
