The Martin Family in Pomona

In this photo we can see Herb & Mary Martin, with their children Bert and Doree, and Herb's mother Caroline Martin. They are standing in front of the Martin home in Pomona, where Doree lived from the time she was born until she married in 1951.

No description is written on this colorized portrait of Bert and Doree, but it appears to have been taken in 1933.

This page contains photos and film clips of the Martin family in Pomona in the 1930s and early 1940s. Herb had a dental practice in Pomona, and income from his work supported the family well through the Great Depression and the deprivations of World War II. There are no records of any family travels during this time, except for what appear to be annual spring treks to the desert near Palm Springs to see the wildflowers.

Other members of the Barcus (Mary’s) family were nearby, and they appear in some of the film clips and photos. Both Mary and Herb had grown up in Pomona, and it was home to all of them until the 1950s.

Many of the photos on this page came from a Martin family photo album that was handed down in the archives. Film clips were shot on Herb & Mary’s 16mm movie camera, purchased in 1928 when Bert was born.

Mary with Bert and Dory in 1934. I don’t know when the spelling of my mother’s name was changed from “Dory” to “Doree” but it was spelled the old way for this picture in the photo album.

From 1934 – one of my favorite pictures of Bert and Doree.

In 1937, the family traveled out to the desert near Palm Springs, where Bert and Doree again gather flowers. This clip ends with a great shot of the travel trailer – they don’t make them like that any more!

This clip dates from 1938. The family poses in front of their house, and then the kids show off their bicycles. In the final segment, Bert allows Doree to hold his pet rat (cringe!).

The dog is Fritzi, and she was part of the family during Doree’s teen years. Here Fritzi serves as a hood ornament.

Easter Sunday 1935 – with an actual bunny! Bert and Doree gather flowers, then Doree tames a butterfly.

For Easter 1936, Bert and Doree gather flowers again, and then have a race with Bert on his bicycle and Doree on skates.

Most of Dick’s cousins lived in California while he was growing up in Indiana, so there were not many opportunities for them to be together until Dick got older.

We have so many pictures of Dick with others in his family – it was not easy to choose which ones to include. It was a great family!
