Annie’s Animals (and other crafts)

Our grandmother, Mary Martin, used to make large papier-mache animals for decorations.

The bunny is paper, I think, not papier-mâché. Peggy is wearing a skirt decorated with Swedish Weaving.

Back in the 1950s, Mary (whom we called ‘Annie’) made quite a few of these life-size animals out of papier-mâché. They were entirely her own design. I don’t know whom they were made for; presumably she had clients who used them for decorations in some way. But sometimes Peggy and I got to see them (and be photographed with them) before she sent them off.

Another craft that Annie used to do is called Swedish Weaving. The embroidered fabric was exceptionally beautiful and used for clothing, purses, tablecloths, etc. As usual she did all of her own designs as well as the craft work. Annie was very generous with her family and gave us lots of things that were products of Swedish Weaving, and we still have many of them. Besides the photos on this page, you can see further examples of Swedish Weaving on this page, along with her other designs and crafts.
