Unc Passes Away

Frank Jessup ("Unc" to us) never got the chance to live in California.

None of us in our generation of the Votaw family ever got to know Unc (Frank Jessup). He never lived near us, and we never went to visit him and Aunt on their farm. And he died young – he was only 64. I remember hearing that he had been a smoker, and died of lung cancer, but I have no evidence for either of those statements.

But my dad (Dick Votaw) thought very highly of him – he and Aunt Tirzah were like another set of parents to him, and he loved spending his days with them on the farm. Unc bought a new Buick for Dick as a college graduation present – at the beginning of his senior year! That tells you something about their relationship.

Frank Jessup ran for and was elected to public office in Indiana, and he served as treasurer of his church. He was obviously a highly capable and trusted person.

We have very little documentation of Frank’s death – only a folder from his funeral service. On this page we have scans of two pages from that folder. They provide information about his birth and death, and about his immediate family.

1957 turned out to be both happy and sad for us. Aunt had moved to Whittier after Unc’s death in 1956. They actually found this house on Sunrise Ave on one of their visits to California before he died, and had planned to move to California as soon as the farm sold. It was being subdivided at this time into lots in the woods area and people were building houses there.
