Family Activities 1967-69

As we kids got older, our family ventures went further afield.

Our family had four unusual events take place in the years 1967-69: we moved to a new house on Philadelphia St.; our new house was almost wiped out by a fire that swept through the hills; I took a 7-week trip to Europe at the age of 15; and we had an exchange student from Panama come and live with us for a year. All four of those events are covered on other pages in this section, but a lot of other things happened as well!

On this page are collected photos of our family activities in the last three years of the 1960s.

Our new house on Philadelphia St needed some improvements, and every time Annie and Grandpa came to visit, Grandpa would bring his tool kit and get to work on some project. Here, on the back patio, John helps Grandpa with a building project.

Christmas 1967, the first in our new house.

Peggy is all dressed up for a special event.

Sue blows out the candles on her cake at the party for her 10th birthday. As usual, one of her siblings is there to help. Note the pumpkins – Halloween was often the theme for Sue’s and my birthdays, since we had them just a week apart in October and often got to share a party.

By the time I was in high school I was big enough to have kids stand on my shoulders in the swimming pool. I was proud to take over this role from Dad.

This was taken on one of the sand dunes on coast of Oregon. In those days (1968) the quads we have now had not yet been invented, and this was the type of vehicle driven on the dunes.

Peggy plays in the snow in this photo from 1969.

This photo featuring all of the women in our family was taken in the front yard of our home on Davista. If memory serves, it was just days before our move to the new house on Philadelphia St. in 1967.

Peggy and Sue demonstrate the value of moving that old swingset to our new house. I think that this was the same swingset that had been purchased for the back yard of the house on Hornby, when I was a toddler.

Behind the fence you can see the trees that were blackened by the fire that came oh-so-close to our house in 1967.

Annie and Grandpa loved taking funny pictures, and John was always willing to cooperate. This one was set up very carefully and it came out well.

While I was out of the country in 1968, the rest of the family took a vacation up north to see the California redwoods and the state of Oregon.

I’m not sure what the occasion was but Peggy and I are all dressed up. I sure liked that mock turtleneck shirt & blazer – thought I was the height of fashion. This picture was taken in our back yard in 1968.

Dad and Aunt Tirzah celebrated their birthdays together on March 10 every year. This was the 1968 party, celebrated at our house. Dad had his traditional present, one dollar for each year, and my siblings help him count it out. This was his 40th. Aunt was 78.

This photo was taken on the same occasion as the one to the left, and features all of the men of the house (except Dad, who was behind the camera as usual).

Peggy and I continued in Junior Theater for another year or two. It really was a good program but it was intended for younger children.

In those days Pomona Box Company would donate the use of a dump truck every New Years’ Day, for our church’s high school group to use to go over to Pasadena and see the Rose Parade. Someone had built some wooden bleachers in the back part of the truck, and when the bed was lifted into the dump position they would be level and serve as an instant grandstand.

I am in this picture, a shy freshman in January 1967 up in the right corner. Mom, who was never shy, is in the front row.

The above photos were taken on a family vacation that I don’t actually remember, although I was clearly a participant. It appears to be at a lake.

A family meal in our dining room in 1969. It looks like we might be celebrating Aunt’s birthday since she has a corsage. Apparently I was taking the picture but was not wise to Grandma’s trick of backing out of photographs.

Mom’s birthday, with a Hawaii theme, in 1969. Note that Dad still has his crew cut. It didn’t last much longer.

Sue and I shared a birthday party (her 12th, my 17th) at Grandma and Walter’s house in 1969. That was at the beginning of my senior year in high school and I had finally grown out of my crew cut.
