Peggy was a member of the songleaders team at Whittier High School. This picture was taken in 1970, which was her sophomore year. The songleaders performed at football games.

Here’s the songleader team from Whittier High, with Peggy on the left.

Peggy had a tradition of eating the turkey leg at Thanksgiving dinner every year. Here she is at Thanksgiving 1973.

Peggy’s high school graduation, 1973

These are photos taken at Peggy’s 18th birthday, in January 1973, at our house on Philadelphia St. It looks like her birthday party theme was “skiing” although I don’t recall her being a skier.

This photo from 1971 shows Peggy with her Grandma Mildred at Mildred and Walter’s house on Scenic Dr.

Peggy’s school photos for her four years of high school. The one on the far right is her senior photo.

Peggy’s Trip to Hawaii

Peggy is all dressed up for her trip to Hawaii.

In this photo you can see Peggy standing on her surfboard out in the ocean. The waves are not too scary.

At lesson’s end, Peggy brings her surfboard back to the beach.

As Peggy’s 1973 high school graduation approached, she was given a choice of graduation gifts. She could get a new sewing machine, or she could go on a trip to Hawaii with her grandparents, Mary and Herb Martin (Annie and Grandpa).

This was not an easy decision for Peggy. She was interested in sewing, and thinking about a career in clothing design. But going to Hawaii was a fantastic dream. She talked to her mother, and Mom encouraged her to take the trip. “You can get a sewing machine another time, but you may not have another chance to go to Hawaii with Annie and Grandpa.” Mom always had sensible advice to give us.

Peggy chose the Hawaii trip, and never regretted it!

Annie created a scrapbook for Peggy during the trip. The scrapbook includes pictures and flyers that commemorate the various activities of the trip. It also includes a number of hand-drawn cartoons that Annie added just for fun. Some of these cartoons are pictured here.

Peggy swings from a banyon tree in Kapiolani Park in the above photo. Annie’s depiction of the same event is pictured at left.

Peggy took this picture of Annie and Grandpa on the beach in Hawaii.

Back in those days, travelers to Hawaii would be given a lei as a welcome gift as they stepped off the plane.

This photo shows the location of their hotel room in Hawaii, and the cartoons illustrate the birds that they watched while they were there. Annie and Grandpa went to Hawaii fairly often, and they always stayed in the same hotel where they were friends with the owners.

One of the tourist attractions in Hawaii is the Iolani Palace, where King Kamehameha was (at one time) the ruler. Grandpa called him “Kami-ha-ha.”

The most exciting event of the trip was probably Peggy’s surfing lesson.

The surfing lesson started on the shore, of course.
