Susan’s First Two Years

Her name is Susan, but we all called her "Susie" for many years.

Anyone who was born with the last name “Votaw” knows that, despite the fact that it has only five letters and is pronounced exactly as it is spelled, our name is misspelled a LOT. And newspapers hardly ever get it right.

This is the announcement of Sue’s birth – our family’s third baby and our third hospital. Whittier Hospital was over in East Whittier; I think that Murphy Memorial (Peggy’s birthplace) was closed by the time Sue was born.

On October 25 our little Sue was born and she was so tiny we had to leave her in the hospital for two weeks until she gained back her birth weight of five pounds. In the meantime Aunt thought that this child had come for her to take care of and to love with all she had.

The above images show the front and the inside of the family Christmas card sent out in 1958 or 1959.

The photos below are of Sue from birth in 1957 to age 2 in 1959. As you can see her hair was dark at birth, but she quickly became a blond and stayed that way all through childhood.
