You Should All Thank Arismendy

Headlines this week: “The Rusney Castillo deal hasn’t worked out well for the Red Sox” (NBCSports.com, among many others).

It doesn’t even look like Castillo is going to start for the Red Sox. Think how discouraged and miserable you would be feeling right now if you had drafted him in the second round last year.

But thanks to Arismendy Alcantara, who got drafted instead, one of you was spared this awful fate.

I suggest The Ballad of Arismendy Alcantara for our morning meditation.

    Don’t you worry, Arismendy,
You’ll improve, you’re sure to please
Even if you don’t see Wrigley
You’ve a place here on the Cheese.

Except he doesn’t have a place there on the Cheese anymore, pretty much entirely because he didn’t get better and hasn’t seen Wrigley.

Still, your point is well-taken. It’s very likely your valiant, self-sacrificial intervention has saved someone from a year’s heartache over Rusney Castillo. In fact, they were spared running Runey out there for a month or two until it became clear how bad he was, with the attendant damage to their win-loss record. Given how close the race was last year, it’s pretty likely that someone owes his championship to the Cheese bravely taking the bullet!
