League Updates

Who had the biggest day?

Scoring is up this year — way up, according to the seat of my pants.  Homers, too. At least as far back as Scooter Gennett’s four-homer day, things have been askew.  Three homers in a row to greet Max Scherzer a few days ago?  The Marlins’ 22 – 10 win over the Rangers Wednesday?

.

Yesterday the Nationals hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back homers in the fourth, made an out, and then hit a fifth.  Two of our players were involved.  That got me to wondering: for each EFL team, who had the biggest day at the plate yesterday?

.

And, no, I did not know the answer before I asked the question.  Not for 100% certain, anyway.

Pittsburgh: L, 2 – 6. (.083, .083, .333; 5 ip, 5 er). JD Martinez hit a grand slam homer for the only runs in the game between Arizona and St. Louis — and for the Alleghenys as well!. He went out his other three trips to the plate. (.250, .250, 1.000). The Alleghenys only sent two other men to bat, and they both went 0 for 4. It’s too bad that measly batting line wasn’t for 50 plate appearances, right?
.
Cottage: W, 6 – 4. (.235, .235, .647; 13 ip, 6 er). Bryce Harper had two homers and a double in 5 at bats in the Nationals’15 – 2 rout of the Brewers.  (.600, .600, 2.000). And here’s another Glory of the EFL (GOEFL): Harper’s leadership allowed the Cheese to score 6 runs with only 4 baserunners (and 17 ABs)!  Actually, that was mostly due to capacitance: we store up offensive (and pitching) charges on big days and release them on small ones.
.
Haviland: DNP, 2 – 1. (.304, .385, .565; 3.7 ip, 3 er). With 26 plate appearances, the Dragons got in almost an entire game, but didn’t have a game to apply them to so the effect was muted.  Similarly, in the opposite direction, for the pitching.  Anthony Rizzo went 2 for 4 with a homer and a stolen base. (.500, .500, 1.250).
.
Flint Hill: 1 – (-2). (.394, .429, 1.004;  3.3 ip, 0 er). The Tornados charged their capacitors with a ton (35 PA worth) of great hitting and 3.3 ounces of great pitching. So they are probably closer to the top than the 1.6 games showing above. Manuel Margot led the way going 3 for 4 with a double and a homer (.750, .750, 1.750)..

Portland: W 1, L (-1); 2 – (-1). (.281, .343, .531; 1.3 ip, 0 er). Rosebuds took their lead from Anthony Rendon’s 2 for 4 with a homer and a walk in the National’s romp. (.500, .600, 1.250).  That good team batting line represents 35 plate appearances from 8 batters, so it’s pretty solid.

.

Kaline: W (-1), L 1; (-4) – 4. (.100, .125, .167; 5.3 ip, 7 er).  Paper-thin hitting and Liam Hendriks’ sextuple chulk (0.7 ip, 4 er) made this a damaging off-day for the Drive. Hendriks achieved his chulk by walking the bases loaded and then… how about we finish this story a little later?

With so little to work with, it’s hard to find a big hitting performance.  In fact, only three hitters got hits — and two of them (Peter Bourjos and Yoenis Cespedes) were  doubles. Cespedes got his in only four at bats, so he had the best line (.25o, .25o, .500).

.
Peshastin: DNP, 2 – 2. (.095, .240, .238; 6 ip, 1 er).  Max Scherzer had a good day, and Carlos Santana hit a homer in four trips to the plate. (.250, .250, 1.000). But that’s about it for good news for the Pears. Shouldn’t they be coming into their prime season any time now?
.
Old Detroit: DNP, 5 – 0. (.364, .462, .864; no pitching). Remember that Liam Hendriks sextuple chulk?  It culminated in Steve Pearce blasting a two-out 10th inning walk-off grand slam homer for his one hit in 5 at bats.  (.200, .200, .800). That might be the Wolverine’s funnest batting line, but it’s not the best.  Kyle Schwarber went 3 for 4 with a triple and two homers. (.750, .750, 2.750). Then again, a Schwarberian triple is pretty fun, too. (GOEFL: Schwarber hit two homers, and Pearce a grand slam, but the W’s scored only 5 runs. That’s 120% efficiency! Or something.)
.
Canberra: “W”, 4 – 4. (.192, .192, .462; 2 ip, 0 er).  Jose Abreu went 2 for 4 with two homers. (.500, .500, 2.000). Those 4 runs are really only 3.5, rounded up because I also rounded 3.8 runs allowed up to 4.  With only 26 plate appearances, there’s some capacitance at work here, too.
.
DC: L, 2 – 8. (.091, .167, .091; no pitching). This result is almost pure capacitance, since the Balk only managed 12 plate appearances.  The biggest Balk offender was Kole Calhoun, who went one for three with a walk (.333, .500, .333) to do ALL of the DC damage.
—–
So — who won?  JD Martinez dominated his MLB game like no one else. If he strikes out in the key at bat, or takes a sick day, three teams go all day without scoring.
.
But for EFL purposes the best offensive performance goes to Kyle Schwarber. Finally.
