More Memoria

Yesterday I memorialized my dad on the grounds that he, a non-baseball fan, taught me something about baseball at a ball game where Kent Hrbek provided the only other memorable event by hitting a ball into old Tiger Stadium’s third deck.  Hrbek was in the featured photo even though he hasn’t died.

Today I want to remember an actual baseball player: Bill Buckner. Yesterday news of his death brought forth a steady stream of tributes about what a great person he was, how he bore up so well under the abuse he received for Mookie Wilson’s 1986 dribbler up the first base line, and how he was so gracious when the Red Sox honored him in 2007. I’ve seen the iconic play dozens of times.  Yesterday was the first time I saw video of him receiving a huge Fenway Park ovation while throwing out the first pitch in the 2008 Red Sox home opener.

It’s also the first time I’ve seen his guest star appearance on Curb Your Enthusiasm, a TV show I never watched one second of.  (One of many, many, many such shows, which kills me in trivia contests.) I’ve seen 90 seconds of it now, and so can you. Buckner concludes the episode by making a spectacular diving catch of a baby who has been cast out of a window about five stories up in a burning building. I got chills watching it, not so much for Buckner’s heroics, but at the horrifying spectacle of a crowd of people encouraging the frantic mother to toss her baby out the window when she’s just about to be rescued by a ladder truck and could carry the baby down.

I think of Buckner as a Dodger.  He debuted with them in 1969, as the Dodgers were beginning their climb out of their post-Koufax pit of depression. He was there with Garvey, Russell, and Cey, a gang of young good players who looked like they would lead the Dodgers back to the promised land.  I have his rookie card somewhere. I was still a Dodger fan then, although I moved to Oregon the same year Koufax retired, so it was hard slogging in this baseball-resistant state. I was not happy when Buckner got traded for Rick Monday, even though he seemed to lag a bit behind the other young Dodger stars. He always looked so serious, even fierce. I had no clue he was a kind and gracious person. Maybe he wasn’t.  Maybe he grew into those virtues, maybe even the Error played it’s part in making Buckner the man he eventually was.

The kind of man about whom Mookie Wilson would say, in 2014,

“Bill and I have become very, very close. We’re really the best of friends. As good a friend as you can have. …

“He is a great, great person. We enjoy each other’s company and we have a lot in common, a lot more than you would think. And it’s just been great.”

“He’s a part of history, and that part of history is never gonna leave. It’ll be here long after Bill and I are gone from this earth, so we just kind of embrace it.”

Portland: W, 5 – 4. (39 PA, .242, .359, .394; 2 ip, 1 er, 4.50 ERA). Tommy Pham hit two doubles and walked in 5 plate appearances to lead a lackluster Rosebud offense just far enough to get a real win. Apparently Anthony Rendon has decided to let his value drop so he won’t get traded, going 0 for 3 Monday.
Flint Hill: L, 4 – 5.  (40 PA .211, .250, .421;  9.7 ip, 8 er, 7.45 ERA).  Barely above replacement hitting (thanks primarily to homers by Derek Dietrich and Austin Meadows).  Mike Trout took Memoral day off like he’s been doing fairly often lately – 0 for 4 this time, with one walk.
.
Old Detroit: W, 7 – 5. (57 PA, .308, .368, .596; no pitching). There were three Wolverine homers yesterday, the same as the Yankees.  But the Yankees made MLB headlines for their three, whereas the W’s have never made an MLB headline.  However, we are making progress.  Josh Bell and fellow brute Nick Ahmed were ignored in the media, but Dan Vogelbach’s blast to the third deck in T-Mobile Park was so mighty they couldn’t ignore it.  It looked a lot like the one Kent Hrbek hit in Detroit the night my dad taught me something about baseball. You can see video of the moonshot here — if your video link works.  (Mine didn’t on my computer, but did on my phone.)  You might also check out Mallex Smith stealing is way all around the bases, including home — that’s also on video, even though it happened for the Toledo Mud Wolverines in our league, where Mallex is still getting his game back.
.
Canberra: DNP, 2 – 0.  (23 PA, .278, .435, .935; 7.3 ip, 6 er, 7.36 ERA). The ‘Roos are in an interesting place.  They have high quality offensive players, as you can see from today’s line. But they aren’t getting enough PA’s to avoid replacements, and the pitching has blemishes.  Michael Pineda did ok yesterday — 6 ip, 3 er — but he’s going on the MLB IL for a leg injury.  Daniel Zamora messed things up with a miniature nonuple chulk (1/3 of an inning, 3 earned runs). If Canberra can fill out its active roster a little more it looks like it can compete all season.
.
Peshastin: W, 4 – 0.  (30 PA, .241, .313 .483; 0.7 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA). Clint Frazier and Logan Forsythe provided the offense in yesterday’s shutout victory, combining to go 3 for 7 with a homer.
.
Pittsburgh: W, 10 – 2. (35 PA, .406, .457, .875; 8.3 ip, 1 er, 1.08 ERA).  Now here’s a day Allegheny fans will want to remember. Seven of the nine Allegheny hitters OPSed over 1.000, with JD Martinez leading the way with 2 homers.  The other two — Kurt Suzuki 1 for 3, and Brian Goodwin, 1 for 4 — also chipped in, so no one was a deadweight at the plate. Similarly, three pitchers all pitched very well, Sonny Gray for 6 ip, 1 er, and Dillon Maples and Lou Trivino combined for 2.3 ip, o er).
.
Kaline: “L”, 10 – 6. (43 PA, .400, .442, .575; no pitching).  Those wily Drive disguised a rather big win as a “loss” so no one would notice them creeping a little closer to the top.  The might Orlando Arcia poked a homer and a double to lead the robust offense, and Jesse Winker went 4 for 7 with a walk to have a pretty nice week yesterday.
.
Cottage:  W, 5 – 1.  (27 PA, .308, .345, .385;  6 ip, 0 er, 0 era).  The Cheese got moved two notchess up the standings with their performance Monday, solid on offense, overwhelming on pitching. Yonny Chirinos, aided by a spectacular catch by Tornado Kevin Keiermayer, completed 5 shutout innings.  All seven Cheese hitters got at least one hit… actually six got exactly one single each, while Nicholas Castellanos achieved two doubles.
.
Haviland: L, 5 – 6. (47 PA, .205, .319, .436; 2 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA). With only two innings of relief pitching, the Dragons couldn’t avoid taking on some replacement innings.  The offense, while respectable wasn’t enough to overcome the replacement pitching.
Bellingham: L, 3 – 9. (30 PA, .207, .233, .345;  5 ip, 5 er, 9 era). It’s hard to win with a 9.00 ERA. Jarrod Dyson tried to lead the way (2 for 4 with a double and a single) but almost no one followed him.
.
Brookland: “W”, 3 – 5. (32 PA, .214, .281, .393; 0.7 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA).  Cody Bellinger was all over the highlight reels for his defense: giant cannon-shot throws from deep in right field, that kind of thing. Plus he homered again. But it wasn’t enough.
.
DC: DNP, 3 – 0.  (37 PA, .313, .405, .563 — Happy Edgar Martinez Day!;  0.3 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA).  A miniscule shutout outing was nice decoration, but the key to the day was it being an off-day in DC, and the Edgar Martinez-like offense!  Addison Russell led the way with a 3 for 4 day featuring a homer.
