Trade “Alive”line

The trade deadline is upon us (just one week away, now) and things are heating up. This year is the first year that all trades must be completed by July 31. In past years teams could still perform trades until August 31 with the use of the waiver wire, but not more! It should make this trade season much more active in the next week – thus, an “alive”line instead of a deadline.

I don’t know if such records are kept, but anecdotally speaking, Flint Hill is one of the most active traders in the EFL. Of the 30 players on my team, I have acquired 15 of them via trade. I’d be interested to know what the ratio is on your team, if you have time to check it (Editor’s note: Dave can reset your password on the EFL website if you want to be able to post but don’t remember your password).

As such, I take a keen interest in trades, and I like to peruse your rosters to see who might be good trade bait, which is something happening at a lot of different baseball sites these days. Thus, in the spirit of the week, I want to take a guess at which player(s) on each EFL roster is most likely to be involved in an MLB trade this next week:

Bellingham: Hunter Pence. The 36 year old revived slugger has hit 15 home runs for the Rangers this season during which he was named an All Star. Having just returned from an injury, he has potential to hit another 10-15 home runs and is under contract through 2020. Some team in need of an OF/DH type will pry him away from the Rangers. My guess: Tampa Bay Rays.

Brookland: Jose Martinez. Martinez is built for the AL, but the Cardinals have been reluctant to part with him. His OPS is hovering around .750 this past month, and he has been heating up at the right time. But he needs an AL team because his defense is not that great. My guess: Oakland.

DC: Scooter Gennett. Scooter wowed the world last year with his rediscovered power stroke, and expectations for him this season were high. Then he suffered a gnarly hamstring injury early on and missed a month or two of the season. But he is back and could be had for a low price since he has not yet been hitting well. As a 2B power hitter, he could fit well on a team that is in need of more production from that spot. My guess: back to Milwaukee. (to back up Keston Hiura)

Haviland: Harrison Bader or Tyler O’Neill. The Cardinals need some pitching help (don’t we all!) and will be willing to part with one or both of these guys (in addition to Martinez mentioned above) in order to get it. I think they are more likely to deal O’Neill than Bader, simply due to Bader’s track record in the MLB, but maybe a young team will value O’Neill more than Bader because of his youth and power. My guess: One or both to the Giants. (I bet Puig also gets traded…but that is low hanging fruit)

Canberra: Yates is the obvious choice, but I am picking Tim Beckham. Dealin’ Dipoto will be active this next week, and Beckham has shown he can hit, though he is streaky. A team looking for a utility guy who can play IF and OF (smart move, Jerry, having Beckham get reps in the OF) will make a move for him. My guess: Houston.

Kaline: Marcus Stroman. The Yankees are so desperate to win a World Series after decades of watching the Red Sox prevail time and time again (how’s that for hyperbole?), that they will make a lopsided deal to their Eastern division foes for Stroman, who will come to Bronx and (I am sad to say) lead them to a championship. My guess: Yankees.

Portland: Merrill Kelly. This one was difficult for me. Most of the Rosebuds players are either on a contending team or are under control for a few years with their MLB team. The Dbacks are still considering whether they will buy or sell this year, but if they sell I think Kelly could be a better target than a Ray or Greinke due to his success and contract. My guess: Cubs.

Flint Hill: Dennis Santana. Mychal Givens is the easy choice – I think he is bound to get traded to someone like the Rays. But Santana is a sleeper, and because of the Dodgers depth and desperation I think he will be in a package to someone this season, which could give him a chance in an MLB rotation soon. That would be exciting! My guess: Pirates.

Pittsburgh: Maikel Franco. The Phillies are desperate to win after signing Harper to an enormous contract and trading for Realmuto. Franco will be a throw with some of their young guys (Sixto Sanchez) to a team who will send them someone with power to protect Harper. My guess: Rockies.

Old Detroit: Madison Bumgarner. The OD pitching staff could have two SP on the move – Robbie Ray in addition to MadBum – which could, if the pieces fall right, give him a chance to free up money for the final push of the season. That isn’t frightening at all. This is wild, but I think the Red Sox will trade for MadBum. They love lefty SPs and they don’t want the Yankees to have a walk in the park to the pennant. My guess: Red Sox.

Peshastin: Clint Frazier. Clint has made waves in his short career, from his vibrant red hair (cut when he became a Yankee) to his brash attitude around being demoted to Scranton despite his solid 2019 campaign. Teams want him, and he will most assuredly be included in any deal. My guess: Indians (back home for him).

Cottage: Nicholas Castellanos. He is Jose Martinez, part 2. Good bay, subpar defense. Teams in contention usually pry these types of players away for the offensive holes they may have in their own rosters. I don’t think Castellanos will fetch much in return, but he will be traded. My guess: Indians.

Portland: L, 2-10 (60 PA, .196, .250, .304; 10 IP, 10 ER, 9.00 ERA) The Rosebuds want to forget yesterday ever happened. What a rotten day. Their hitters combined for as many walks and hits as strikeouts (17 of each) and their pitchers gave up as many runs as innings pitched. Those below the Rosebuds feel grateful for a glimmer of hope in terms of every catching them, but I have to imagine the Rosebuds management team is calling a team meeting right about now to make sure these kinds of days don’t happen too many more times.
Flint Hill: “L,” 4-3 (54 PA, .229, .313, .315; 3 IP, 0 ER) The margin between Portland and Flint Hill is small, but it could have been even smaller had the Tornado hitters decided to actually hit. Thankfully, the pitching staff realized the opportunity and did their part. Are we happy to gain a game? Yes! Are we frustrated because it could have been even closer? Absolutely.
Old Detroit: “W,” 5-6 (51 PA, .214, .333, ..381; 12.3 IP, 6 ER, 4.38 ERA) Trea Turner is healthy (finally, right, Ron?) and hit for the cycle last night. MadBum doesn’t want to leave San Francisco, so he pitched his little heart out last night (have you noticed, though, that since his little motorcycle accident he hasn’t hit like he used to?). But those two players didn’t do enough to earn an actual win, only a fake EFL “win.”
Pittsburgh: W, 5-2 (35 PA, .345, .457, .379; 6.3 IP, 0 ER) The Alleghanys must like holding hands, because they got 10 hits and 9 of them were singles. Additionally, they earned 7 BBs of various sorts (BB, HBP, IBB) which shot their OBP high but kept their OPS low. It turns out, even if you only walk and hit singles, you can still score runs and win. It helps when your pitchers give up 0 runs, led by future hall of famer (maybe?) Stephen Strasburg.
Haviland: W (-1), L 2; 5-13 (41 PA, .275, .293, .500; 10 IP, 12 ER, 10.80 ERA) Sometimes, as a father, you decide to enter into the pain of your child in order to remind them they are not alone. I think that is the only way you can explain Haviland’s day yesterday – he wanted to make sure Portland knew he wasn’t alone. Isn’t that sweet? Haviland got the benefit of the NYY/MIN game last night, which was a slugfest. Sano hit 2 HRs, which was awesome (he really has fixed his swing!), but German gave up 8 ER to those same Twins.
Canberra: L, 2-12 (47 PA, .205, .340, .308; 1.3 IP, 4 ER, 108.00 ERA) Blake Parker was another contributor to the NYY/MIN bloodbath, giving up 4 ER in 1/3 of an inning. That kind of outing just demoralizes the rest of the team, and it was no different in Canberra. The cool thing is they had as many BBs as hits – 8 and 8 – but the uncool thing is they also had 14 Ks and every hit but one was a single.
Peshastin: “W,” 2-4 (43 PA, .237, .326, .368; 7.7 IP, 3 ER, 3.52 ERA) Yesterday was the kind of day (sans the NYY/MIN game) that Rob Manfred could use to say, “See, the ball isn’t different!” Kind of like those who don’t believe global warming point to the tepid summer we are having in the PNW as an example of how global warming isn’t really a thing. The Pears also suffered a bit from the “singles” epidemic some others have suffered – getting 6 singles out of 9 hits.
Kaline: L, 3-3 (54 PA, .288, .296, .481; 9.7 IP, 9.7 IP, 6 ER, 5.59 ERA) The Drive were able to solve the singles problem, getting extra base hits for nearly half of their 15 hits. But, as you notice from their OBP for the day, they only walked 1 time in 54 plate appearances!
Cottage: W, 9-2 (49 PA, .317, .388, .488; 13.7 IP, 5 ER, 3.29 ERA) The Cheese has the best day by far of any EFL team. They had 6 players OPS over 1.000, led by Jorge Polanco (another who benefited from the NYY/MIN football game). Danny Duffy has responded well to his owner’s public roasting a few weeks ago, pitching a second quality start in a row.
Bellingham: W, 5-5 (27 PA, .190, .370, .286; 23 IP, 9 ER, 3.52 ERA) The Cascaged offense is showing their age these days, having a hard time getting going each day. They had more BBs than hits (5 to 4) and somehow managed to score 5 runs (I don’t know why or how). Their pitching was incredible, though! Wade Miley and Mike Fiers led the way for them, which was just enough to get a win.
Brookland: W, 7-2 (37 PA, .303, .378, .606; 10.7 IP, 3 ER, 2.53 ERA) If Cottage had the first best day, Brookland had the second best day. And today he led about 30 faculty in a workshop about writing and LIBA 100, and did so very well, giving him TWO good days in a row! He even managed to politely and directly end a tangential conversation that could have derailed his workshop, and did so with grace and aplomb. Back to baseball, his team hit 4 doubles and 2 HRs, with 5 players OPSing over 1.000. And his pitchers followed suit – led by Dallas Kuechel and Zack Godley.
DC: W, 4-2  (36 PA, .265, .278, .412; 8.3 IP, 2 ER, 2.16 ERA) This is what I have been warning you about, Rob. These kinds of days help you feel good about your team, but make it less likely to get an awesome pick next year! You really should send me your best players for virtually nothing. Last night, those players were Andrew Benintendi, Kole Calhoun, and Dylan Bundy. <y email is always open!

  • This is going to sound a little weird, but one of the reasons I drafted Castellanos this year was in hope that he would be traded. I figured it would give me a financial boost and maybe a decent prospect mid-year. I also figured that he would hit better than he has. Other than NiCast (just made that up; think it will stick?) I continue to hope that Danny Duffy will be traded. That would be like winning the EFL Lottery, if it existed. Hey – there’s an idea!

    • You are an active trader, too. Which is why I’m always knocking on your door. It would be such a gift to you if Duffy was traded. Wow, that’s fun to think about!
