Day 12: Vernazza to Florence

This is a difficult trip. The distance is not great, but you have to change trains two times (La Spezia and Pisa), and the experience is exhausting. In Italy they have not yet heard of the ramp; neither have they considered scheduling connecting trains on adjoining tracks. (In Switzerland both of these things are common.) In Italy, you have to haul the suitcases down a flight of stairs, go over to your destination track, and then haul them up the stairs. In larger railroad stations lifts (we call them elevators) are provided, but they are few and there is a long line waiting to use them, and your train is coming in just a few minutes.
