1944-1949

We don’t know anything about Frankie, except that she married Bert in 1949. We have no other information about her.

During his high school years, Bert spent his time buying, fixing up, and reselling old cars. On this page are pictures of these classics.

Doree and her family had a second house at Balboa, a beach city. Much of the material on this page comes from time spent there.

Many of the Votaw cousins lived in or near Whittier, and they enjoyed getting together – especially at Christmas.

No story here – just a series of family photos taken during Dick’s school years in Whittier. In these photos we can see Harold, Mildred, Dick, Frank, and Tirzah as they looked during the 1940s. The photos were taken in front of the Votaw home in Whittier.

Mildred’s sister Tirzah and her husband Frank Jessup had been left behind when the Votaws moved to California, so the Jessups traveled west every year to visit.

In the summer of 1948 Dick and his friend Jim Ervin took a cruise to Alaska. While on the trip, Dick sent letters to Aunt & Unc in Indiana. Dick wrote a brief account of the trip in a section of his autobiography. These writings appear below, on this page.

In 1944, the Votaws moved across the country to Whittier, California, and Dick finished high school and college there.

In high school and college, Doree was elected to several different offices in the student council. Her activities in these roles were publicized in local papers.

Thanks to all her friends in Indianapolis, she got the grand prize, and made the headlines too!

Harold, Mildred and Dick moved from Indianapolis to Whittier in 1944, and Harold worked with his brothers at Pomona Box.
