Mildred in Ministry in Indiana

Mildred inherited speaking and leadership gifts from her father, a Quaker pastor. She was active both in church ministry and as a citizen wherever she lived.

Mildred was always a leader in whatever organization she was a part of. She was a hard worker, and full of ideas. Consequently, her picture was in the newspaper on several occasions. Sometimes, her son Dick and we grandchildren were in the paper too! Some of these clippings were saved and passed down to us in the archives. The three clips below are related to a book and toy show at Ayres, the famous department store in Indianapolis where Mildred loved to shop. (Click on the photos to enlarge them.)

As a child, Mildred loved to dress up, and her love for fashion and costumes stayed with her as an adult.

Here is Mildred in her “Quaker lady” costume. She wrote a story called “Mary, the Preacher’s Wife” and was invited to go places and read it while wearing this costume. This style of dress was common for Quakers of her grandmother’s era.
