After their wedding on June 25th, 1926, Harold and Mildred drove away in their Chevy for a honeymoon trip to the East Coast. Along the way they faithfully sent post cards home to family.

Herb & Mary Get Married
We have very few archive items on the young Herb & Mary, but we do have their beautiful marriage license.
The Votaws and the Jessups in Plainfield
The two couples were close friends.
Harold & Mildred Get Married
After a relationship that spanned 15 years, Harold and Mildred were married in 1926.
Frank & Tirzah Get Married (1913)
Frank and Tirzah were married Quaker-style, right after the meeting for worship. Lewis Stout, Tirzah’s father and the pastor of the church, officiated. Newspaper articles give details about the wedding.
Frank Hinshaw Jessup
Unfortunately, we have only a few pictures of Frank as a young man, and nothing in writing except for the pig farm catalog (see below).
Tirzah Stout’s College Years
Tirzah Stout, who as an adult was Tirzah Jessup and my father’s Aunt, was born in 1890. Consequently, we have a lot of pictures of her from her college years, but few before that.
Herbert Martin Grows Up
We have good pictures of Herb from boyhood through his graduation from dental school. We also have a detailed record of his life, kept by his parents.
Mary Frances Barcus as a Young Person
As the fourth child, Mary did not have many pictures taken of her when she was growing up. Photos on this page were found in an old family album. This one was taken in 1921, when Mary was 17.
Harold Votaw as a Young Man
No writings about Harold’s childhood were passed down to us, and not very many pictures, either, until his college years. But what we have is good.
Mildred: the College Years
Mildred went to Earlham College, in Richmond, Indiana, 92 miles from her home in Plainfield. Earlham is a Quaker college. She was engaged to Harold Votaw, and several of these pictures were taken to send to him in California.
Mildred: the Growing Up Years
On this page we have pictures of Mildred from the time she was a young girl through her high school years, and video clips in which Mildred tells about her life as a pastor’s kid.
Grandparents: When They Were Very Young
This page contains pictures of my grandparents from birth to age five. For some of them, I have only one picture; for others, the archives contained more images than I can use.
Remembering Gertrude Stout
“If Gertie hadn’t died, I would never have been born.”
The Courtship of Tirzah and Frank
Tirzah and Frank Jessup were married on Feb. 16, 1913, and on their 18th anniversary in 1931 friends and family got together to make them a special album of remembrance. We still have it!
The Courtship of Harold and Mildred
Their story, told in their own words.
