Notes:
1. The EFL team with the best day Wednesday was…. the Balk! Six hitters OPSed 1.000 or better, led by Robbie Grossman’s 3 for 4 with a double and a homer (2.500 OPS). Congratulations on gaining an entire game on first place in a single day. I can think of at least 8 jealous teams.
2. At the other end of the league, the Dragons stumbled to the second-worst result Wednesday, due mostly to crummy hitting. This allowed almost every EFL team to gain on them. I suspect they are just toying with us?
3. Who was the team with a worse result on Wednesday than Haviland? It was the…Cottage Cheese! Those showy offensive numbers only produced 4 runs because they were thin (28 plate appearances) and depressed by 2 GIDP.
4. Which team was only slightliest better than the Dragons? The Kaline Drive! Plus there were uplifting moments, including Ichiro’s 2 for 4 with a triple, and Jonathan Villar’s 2 for 4 with two homers. Villar is OPSing 1.565 this month, including 4 homers in 5 games.
5. All three of the top teams chasing the Dragons gained on them. Unf0rtunately, Pittsburgh gained the fastest — 0.7 games to the Rosebud’s 0.2 and the Wolverines’ 0.5. This means the Alleghenys are on pace to catch the W’s tomorrow when both teams are 1.2 games out.
6. Flint Hill outscored its foes — scoring 5 runs — with a nasty, nearly-replacement batting line. How did they do that? It was AJ Pollock. Somehow AJ had been hiding from the database even though he was on the roster. Apparently he wore a disguise involving strategically-placed periods. When he came out of hiding (with Dave’s help), he brought with him offense stored up already this month, which didn’t show up in BP’s numbers since yesterday.
