The Art of the Possible (EFL edition)

With six days to go, what’s still possible?  More than you might think. This is, after all, the EFL.

EFL Standings for 2016

Haviland:  W, 8 – 4.  It’s all too easy. Every time the W’s get close, the D’s sabotage a Wolverine pitcher and send them tumbling back down the slope.
Old Detroit:  DNP, 1 – 1.    Back to 2.1 games behind, again. This darn boulder is so hard to get up the hill, and so easily slips back again.  Thanks, Edwin Diaz, for that little chulk (1 ip, 2 er).
Portland: W 1, L (-1); 5 – (-3).  Dodgers are creeping up on the Rosebuds, now 3 games back. Sure, 6 games is  not very many, and the ‘Buds are still likely to take the NL West title.  But don’t forget: the EFL is more volatile than MLB, and 3 games can be lost in a couple of days here.
Pittsburgh: L, 7 – 8.  The Indians are closing in on the Alleghenys in the AL Central.  The A’s would still be in position for a wild-card berth, if the MLB was ever brought to account for its unconscionable exclusion of the EFL from post-season play.  But I’m guessing it would be less embarrassing in Pittsburgh of Allegheny management could at least claim they had secured another AL Central title.
Canberra: L, 2 – 10.  Canberra has drifted to 4.1 games behind the Nationals.  It isn’t totally impossible for the ‘Roos to win the NL East, but they are going to need some serious help from other MLB teams.
Peshastin: DNP, (-4) – 3. Peshastin lost an entire game in the pennant “race” on a day off. I keep touting the advantages of the EFL, but here is a disadvantage:  you can lose ground even on days you don’t play as a team if your players as individuals stink on that day.
Flint Hill: DNP, (-1) – (-6). The Tornados drew closer to .500 by .003, the pace they need to keep to close the gap from 77 – 79 to 81.1 – 80.9.  A well-used day off!
Kaline:  “W”, 6 – 7.  Things are possible in the EFL that MLB teams can’t even dream of.  For example, all Kaline needs to do is win their last six games, three of them as double wins/negative losses, and they can reduce their losses to 81 and get their wins t0 81 and finish at .500. It is very hard to achieve double wins twice in a row, so these would have to be six huge blowout wins. But it is technically still possible, in the EFL.
Cottage:  W (-1), L 2;  2 – 10.  Woopsie!  The Cheese slipped a long way in a single day, now are on the verge of leapfrogging four teams for a higher rookie draft pick next year.
D.C.: W (-1), L 2;  3 – 17.  Woopsie!  The Balk slipped a long way in a single day, now lead the Twins by less than a game.
