Twin Pokes

Peshastin’s Joey Gallo is a renowned slugger who has had a surprising struggle to settle into a star role.  The Pears acquired him as an EFL rookie in 2016, and have been patiently waiting for him to blossom.  This year looks like the year the Pears have been praying for.  Gallo is hitting .316, .519, .684 in May, his 1.203 OPS just a hair better than his season mark of 1.1o6

….

Josh Bell has been less visible as a prospect. At 26, he’s a year older, and with only 12 homers last year, his reputation as a budding slugger took a massive hit. Still, the Wolverines were happy to snag him in the 2017 rookie draft, and have been waiting 2/3 as patiently as Pears for him to blossom. This year looks like the year the Wolverines have been waiting for.  Bell is batting .375, .464, .750 in May. That’s an improvement over his 1.075 season OPS,  and may be barely enough to hang onto his first base job, especially with Vogelbach slumping lately.

….

On Wednesday Gallo hit a 443-foot blast over the right-center bleachers in Pittsburgh’s PNC park.  The ball bounced on the wide promenade and ended up in the Allegheny River.

That was in the third inning, In the fourth Bell answered, blasting a 472-foot rocket over the right field stands … and directly into the Allegheny on the fly. That was only the fourth time anyone had ever hit a ball directly into the Allegheny.

.

I gather Gallo is playing center field for the Rangers right now, so his path is never going to cross Bell’s while Gallo is on defense.  But Bell plays first base.  So when Gallo walked in the fifth, he took the opportunity to congratulate Bell. There is a video clip of them chatting, which the Pirates announcers interpreted as a conversation about who can hit the ball farthest into the river.  But I read their lips better:

Gallo:  Nice poke!

Bell:  Nice poke yourself.

Gallo:  We hit over 900 feet of homer between us.

Bell:  Yep.

Gallo:  Your Wolverines passed my Pears in the standings Tuesday.

Bell:  Yep.

Gallo:  I wish I was a Wolverine.  Any room on the roster for a slugging center fielder?

Bell:  No.  Schwarber is playing there now, since he’s our best outfielder.

Gallo:  I said “a slugging center fielder.”

Bell:  Good point.  But Schwarb’s been working with Vogelbach, his new hitting guru.  He’s gonna start slugging any day now.  Are you willing to go back to left field when Schwarbs gets his act together?

Gallo:  If it gets me on the Wolverines, sure.

Bell.  There’s another problem: when Mallex Smith blossoms, you’ll ride the pines.

Gallo and Bell:  Hahahahaha.

Gallo:  What about when Lewis Brinson blossoms?

Bell and Gallo:  Hahahahahahahahaha!

.
Flint Hill: L, 0 – 1. (38 PA, .171, .237, .200; 4.7 ip 1 er. 1.93 ERA) Mike Trout went 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts, lowering his May OPS to a mere .801.
.
Portland: L, 5 – 6. (58 PA, .188, .328, .396;  24 ip, 10 er, 3.75 ERA) Thrent Thronton chulked (2 ip, 5 er) and Brett Anderstons struggled (6 ip, 4 er). Chris Sale cleaned up part of the mess ( 8 ip 1 er) and Brad Peacock tried to get the rest of it ( 7 ip, 0 er). Alas, Peacock was just strutting his tail feathers. He’s 100% inactive this month. So there were only  17 innings pitched, still with 10 earned runs.
.
Canberra: L, 0 – 5.  (37 PA, .121, .211, .212; 3 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA). Jose Abreu’s homer was the highlight of the day for the K’s. The blast lifted Abreu’s May OPS to 1.000 even, putting him in the same company as Rhys Hoskins (1.288), Alex Bregman (1.229) and, of course, renowned slugger Mitch Garver (1.113).
Pittsburgh: W (-1), L 2; (-1) – 6. (47 PA, .128, .128, .255; 5.3 ip, 3 er, 5.06 ERA).  Forty-seven plate appearances without a walk. Four singles and two homers (Piscotty and Profar) the only offense. What’s going on in Pittsburgh? Will they sink as the Cheese have sunk with their management abroad?
Old Detroit: W, 4 – 1. (45 PA, .262, .311, .452;  20.3 ip, 5 er, 2.21 ERA). Yusei Kikuchi and Robbie Ray combined for 13.3 ip, 1 er, covering for young Jonathan Loaisiga who got clobbered by the Mariners (4 ip, 4 er).  Max did the Muncy Mash again, adding his homer to Bell’s monster smash. The W’s leap-frogged both the Drive and the Dragons to arrive in 5th place.
.
Haviland: W, 4 – 4. (42 PA, .231, .286 .256; 0 pitching). Ramon Laureano was the lone laureate for the Dragons Wednesday, going 3 for 4 with a walk. The Dragons treaded water as the Wolverines and Drive traded places.
Kaline: L, 3 – 6. (45 PA, .268, .333, .415; 3.3 ip, 2 er, 5.40 ERA). Every Drive batter except pinch-hitter Todd Frazier reached safely at least once, but it wasn’t enough to life the Drive to a win. Still, they remain within easy striking distance of the Dragons and Wolverines.
.
Peshastin: W, 7 – 5. (45 PA, .237, .348, .474; 7 ip, 3 er, 3.86 ERA). The Pears joined the Wolverines as the only two teams to clearly outscore their foes Wednesday. Joey Gallo added 3 walks to his Allegheny-bruising homer. I mean, Allegheny River -bruising homer. Bruising the actual Alleghenys will have to wait.
.
Cottage: L, 8 – 9.  (41 PA, .417, .488, .611; 7 ip, 7 er, 9,000 ERA).  The best offense in the league wasn’t quite enough to secure the win, not with Tyler Skagg’s near-chulk of 7 er in 4.7 innings.
.
Bellingham: L, 6 – 6. (23 ip, .174, .296, .565; 4.3 ip, 3 er, 6.23 ERA).  Jeremy Hellickson failed to keep the Cascades’ no-hitter streak alive (4 ip, 3 er, 7 hits).  Justin Turner’s homer output fell from 3 a day to just 1.  It’s a universal frustration in the EFL: our players just can’t  stay focused.
.
Brookland: “W”, 3 – 4. (39 PA, .270, .308, .378; 14.3 ip, 5 er, 3.14 ERA). CJ Cron went 4 for 5 with a homer, and Brian Dozier went 3 for 4 with a double. But after that the Outs petered out at the plate, so a good day on the mound amounted to little.
.
DC:  L, 2 – 3. (39 PA, .111, .179, .194; 6 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA).  Archie Bradley led a gang of four relievers in an inspiring 6 scoreless innings, but the offence was practically scoreless, too. Five more replacement innings from starters doomed the Balk to a loss.
