League Updates

Yermin is Yawesome! (And so is Turnbull)

While you might think it appropriate that I open this update lauding the work of Spencer Turnbull, who threw a no-hitter last night against the Mariners, I am going to go in a different direction. I mean, Turnbull was great, but it was the 6th no-hitter thrown this season already, and it’s getting kind of tired. Plus, it’s the fourth time since 2019 the Mariners have been no hit, which makes me wonder if a no-hitter against the M’s is more akin to Madison Bumgarner’s 7 inning no-no instead of an actual 9 inning no-no?

Anyway, congrats to Portland for his no-hitter.

But the juicy stuff is happening in Kaline (and also, more accurately, in Chicago). Two nights ago breakout star Yermin Mercedes, playing for the Drive, hit a home run. Which by itself is no big deal. But the setting makes it worth a deeper consideration.

The White Sox were ahead 15-6 in the last inning against the Twins. And for some inexplicable reason, Rocco Baldelli decided to bring in Rosebud Willians Astudillo to pitch. Yes, Astudillo, who throws a 47 MPH fastball. He got two quick outs, and then went to 3-0 on Mercedes.

There is so much energy spent by baseball players policing unwritten rules in the game. One of those unwritten rules is that when you are ahead by a lot and you have a 3-0 count, you don’t swing. Except Mercedes did swing, and he hit a 400+ foot homerun. As he trotted around the bases Astudillo glared at him, but then he got one more out and was done pitching for the night.

But here’s the crazy thing – Mercedes’s own manager, Tony LaRussa, told the media gathered for his post-game press conference that Mercedes was wrong for what he did and was being punished in house. Think about that – his own manager publicly called him out for being awesome. What kind of manager does that?

To add a layer of complexity, last night I read that in arbitration hearings in MLB, every HR is worth somewhere around $40,000-$50,000. And Mercedes has had a long, arduous trip to the White Sox, and is having an excellent season, much to the surprise of everyone.

Can you imagine a business owner chiding his new employee, who came to the profession after making a mid-career change and was helping the company to outperform previous numbers, saying to said employee, “Knock it off?” It is incredulous to me, and I hope the White Sox players start to manage themselves in a great act of mutiny. If you look closely, Mercedes last night went 2 for 4 as an act of defiance, I’d like to imagine.

So here’s to players playing baseball well, and not giving in to stupid unwritten rules. Because unwritten rules are most often used by an older generation to place burdens on the younger generation who has to “earn their keep.” And that kind of mentality never results in good being done. So hit away, Yermin. The rest of us will cheer you on.

The Pears had an un-Pear like day yesterday, which was kind of them. It allowed every team but one (more on them later) to move closer the top of the standings. It was a team effort, with the hitting and the pitching equally bad. Juan Soto and Jazz Chisholm, two of the most exciting players on the Pears, both did their part collecting 2 hits apiece – and Jazz even delivered a home run. But the rest of the team was a combined 3 for 28 (.107 average) with 7 strikeouts and a GIDP. And the pitching didn’t do anything to help, either, with Luis Patino giving up 4 runs in 3.7 innings and John Curtiss giving up 2 in two thirds of an inning. The Tornadoes were able to sneak within .1 games of the Pears.

Flint Hill: W, 9-(-1); 42PA, 25.7IP
AVG: 0.289 OBP: 0.357 SLG: 0.526 OPS: 0.883
ERA: 2.10 WHIP: 1.051
The Tornadoes were able to make a 1.5 game move on the Pears due to an all-around good game from both sides. Well, the hitting was good enough, but the pitching was outstanding. Those raw numbers don’t even tell the story, because Sean Manaea who surrendered 3 earned runs was benched, so the actual line was a 1.37 ERA over 19.7 innings. All three starters did almost the exact same thing – Blake Snell went 6 innings with one run, Julio Urias went 6.7 innings with one run, and Anthony Desclafani went 7 innings with one run. On the hitting side, Austin Meadows, Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez combined to go 7 for 14 with 2 doubles and 2 home runs.

Haviland: W, 9-1; 45PA, 10IP
AVG: 0.317 OBP: 0.356 SLG: 0.659 OPS: 1.014
ERA: 2.70 WHIP: 1.000
The Dragons also made a strong move in the standings, also gaining 1.5 games on the Pears. And like the the Tornadoes, it was a team affair, with better hitting though not quite as good of pitching – though it was still excellent. Ramon Laureano went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs, and Jake Cronenworth went 3 for 4 with two doubles. How good was their hitting? Even Jose Iglesias, he with 38 career home runs in ten seasons, hit a home run. I suppose he is glad to be out from Pujols’ tutelage? 4 of the 5 Dragon pitchers gave up 0 runs yesterday, but one of them gave up 3 (Corbin Martin), but he did so over 5 innings so the damage was minimized.

Old Detroit: W, 6-5; 38PA, 8.7IP
AVG: 0.314 OBP: 0.368 SLG: 0.486 OPS: 0.854
ERA: 4.14 WHIP: 1.034
Wolverine hitters carried their team to victory yesterday, led by 3 players who all can possibly claim some type of tutelage to Pujols, so maybe Ron was on to something. Tommy Edman, who can at least claim he was mentored by Pujols’ history with the Cardinals, collected 3 hits (all singles) in 5 at bats. But the two players who are being newly mentored by Pujols, Will Smith and Gavin Lux, combined to go 4 for 8 with a HR (Lux). The Wolverines sent 4 pitchers to the mound, and three returned scoreless efforts, but the 4th did not fare so well. Jameson Taillon surrendered 4 runs in 4.3 innings, the only blemish on an otherwise good Wolverine day. OD climbed to within 1.5 games of the Pears.

DC: W, 7-5; 42PA, 2IP
AVG: 0.342 OBP: 0.381 SLG: 0.395 OPS: 0.776
ERA: 9.00 WHIP: 0.500
The Balk scored a win by swatting 13 hits (11 of them singles). Besides Matt Chapman’s 2 doubles, there were an additional 4 players who collected multiple hits in the game, but all them were singles. Nico Hoerner hit 3 singles, and Danny Jansen, Bryce Harper and Myles Straw all collected two singles. The pitching was not excellent, but it was only a small amount of innings from two pitchers, which allowed the Balk to move closer to the Pears by .7 games, and now they are 1.8 games out of first.

Kaline: “W,” 6-6, 47PA, 6.7IP
AVG: 0.333 OBP: 0.383 SLG: 0.452 OPS: 0.835
ERA: 6.72 WHIP: 2.090
Did you know that the Drive have the best winning percentage this month in the EFL (.758)? I knew the Drive had some surplus at bats, but I was surprised this morning to see that they have a whopping 234, which is 100 more than they had in April with another 12 days left in May. Yesterday’s leading Drive hitters were Jesse Winker (2 for 4 with a HR), and the infamous Yermin Mercedes (2 for 4 with a walk). But I didn’t know they were also leading the league in winning percentage. That’s mostly due their excellent pitching this month, which they did not get yesterday. The main culprit was JT Brubaker who tossed 5.7 innings but gave up 5 earned runs.

Canberra: “L,” 7-7, 28PA, 3.3IP
AVG: 0.393 OBP: 0.393 SLG: 0.536 OPS: 0.929
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 0.303
Though not as many at bats as some of the other good offensive days, it was still a great day. And at the moment, the Roos don’t really need a lot of at bats – due to the Mets relatively few games played, the Roos already have 153 surplus at bats. The three-headed monster of Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker and Vladito – who each are contributing RC/G above 8 this month – went 7 for 13 with a double and a home run. And that team OBP of .393? It is all hits, which is impressive – not a single walk, IBB, or HBP contributed to it. Three relievers appeared, and all put up a 0 on the board. I have no idea why the Roos gave up 7 runs, when their monthly team ERA is 3.54 and the relievers put up zeroes.

Cottage: W, 9-7; 38PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.333 OBP: 0.368 SLG: 0.472 OPS: 0.841
ERA: 6.43 WHIP: 1.857
It’s not difficult to imagine the Cheese owner sweating a little when he saw Andrew Heaney’s 4 earned runs in 3 innings. But the hitters had his back, churning out 9 runs on 12 hits – 9 singles, 2 doubles, and 1 home run – to lead Cottage to victory. Five hitters collected multiple hits, with Shohei Ohtani once again leading the way (2 for 3 with a HR). He has given up 2 homeruns this season as a pitcher, while hitting 14 of his own. He is good. And, fine, I’ll use blue, even though it doesn’t make sense.

Pittsburgh: W(-1), L(2), (-4)-5; 36PA, no pitching
AVG: 0.118 OBP: 0.167 SLG: 0.118 OPS: 0.284
Earlier I alluded to one team who did not gain ground on the Pears yesterday, and here they are. It isn’t hard to imagine why when seeing this line, and noticing that no one pitched. Jose Altuve collected 2 of the teams’ 4 hits, but Dansby Swanson and Garrett Hampson each struck out 3 times, and the team collected a total of 14 strikeouts on the day.

Portland: “W,” 7-9; 34PA, 15.4IP
AVG: 0.300 OBP: 0.382 SLG: 0.433 OPS: 0.816
ERA: 7.01 WHIP: 1.299
It was a good day at the plate for the Rosebuds, and a bad day on the mound except for Spencer Turnbull who did the pedestrian – throw a no-hitter versus the Mariners. CJ Cron led the way with two singles and a double, and Nick Solak added a home run. If we focus only on Turnbull’s game it might be enough to take our focus off of Matt Harvey, who gave up 6 earned runs in less than 2 innings, or Mike Foltynewicz who gave up 5 runs in 3.7 innings. So we will just say congrats to Turnbull and move on.

Bellingham: “L,”, 4-3; 36PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.242 OBP: 0.278 SLG: 0.303 OPS: 0.581
ERA: 2.57 WHIP: 1.143
How cruel, that on the first good day in a while the Cascades get a loss. First things first – the Cascades got pitching and it was good. Justin Dunn, whose game was overshadowed by Turnbull, turned in a nice performance of 5.7 innings allowing 2 runs. Rhys Hoskins and Kevin Newman both went 2 for 4, with Newman adding in a double.
