Something you’ve never seen before

Every time you go to the park, it goes, you have a chance to see something you’ve never seen before.” — Sam Miller.

The featured picture attached to tonight’s post shows…well, just a second, Dave has unlimited storage or something like that, so let’s put the picture right here, too:

Ender Inciarte, the baserunner, has Dee Gordon’s glove. With the ball in it. Inciarte was stealing second Thursday evening The throw beat Inciarte easily but came in well off the bag toward first base. Gordon made an outstanding short-hop catch just as Inciarte slid into the glove… but the glove, stuck between Inciarte and the ground, came off and slid with Inciarte all the way to second base. Inciarte was safe, and the Alleghenys were another baby step closer to their inevitable championship.

.

There is so much about this play to think about.

  1. I certainly had never seen a play like this before. I’d never imagined it.
  2. I had to think it through painstakingly to understand why Inciarte was safe when he’d swiped the defender’s glove.
  3. What must Dee Gordon have felt like to have his glove stolen so effortlessly in front of all those fans?
  4. Inciarte was clearly aware he was absconding (unintentionally, I presume) with Gordon’s glove. He immediately reached for it to show it to the umpire (who was already calling him safe). Was Inciarte embarrased? Delighted? Empathetic?
  5. Doggone it, Alleghenys. Why can’t you just quietly go about your business mopping up on the rest of us?  Why do you have to so conspicuously display your egregious, extravagant, superfluous good luck?

Speaking of which: here are the standings as of Friday morning:
