League Updates

Today’s Non-update

I spent all day Tuesday mowing and doing other last-minute clean-up at my parents’ old house, then had a school board meeting.  I spent all day today at GF’s Serve Day.  Tomorrow I go back to the folk’s house to finish up the last minute stuff, take Mom to sign papers at the closing in the afternoon, and then go back to the house one last time to walk the property lines with the buyers. So you’ll have to wait until probably Friday to get another update.

No, this isn’t an update. Let me explain:

Jamie was my Serve Group leader today.  He has a fascinating approach to leadership. We served at Mountain View Middle School. He took part of the group to assemble whiteboards and exercise machines. I went with another part reorganizing some of the shelves in the library. Our job turned out to be a lot bigger than anyone expected. About 11:30, Jamie’s group was done and Jamie came to see how we were doing in the library.

He looked at the stacks of  hundreds of books spread out on the floor in alphabetical order and announced “It doesn’t look like you’ve done anything.”  That motivated us, in ways you can probably imagine.

At lunch we chatted about how long GF would continue doing Serve Day. “Everything has to end sometime,” he said, students all around him quietly eating. “Although I’m willing to do it as long as I’m getting a paycheck.”

He also told me I didn’t need to do an update today. “Don’t bother,” he said. “I know Pittsburgh had another great day.”

Of course, by that time I was completely under the spell of Jamie’s leadership. So it’s probably pointless for you to even scroll down to see if there’s an update.

If I hadn’t been instructed not to bother with a post today:
.
Pittsburgh: W 1, L 1; 20 – 10.  I would point out how we can’t tell whether Pittsburgh’s winning streak ended at 14 or 15, because I didn’t update yesterday — but it’s over now and we can go back to our daily lives.
.
Flint Hill:  W, 2- 2.  I would make witty comments here questioning why Flint Hill should be so despondent when they won as many games as the Alleghenys.  I mean, a win is a win, right?
Haviland: L, 3 – 6. I might not say anything about the Dragons. “Let sleeping dragons lie.”  When they slip over the 10-games-behind mark, I’ll say something for sure. Friday should be about right.
.
Cottage: L, 6- 14.   I’d tell you what the Commissioner is thinking when he sees the Cheese are 13.8 games in fourth place with a winning percentage well over .600 — practically tied with the 20-straight-wins Indians.
.
Portland: W 0, L 2; 5- 9.   I’d point out that yesterday the Rosebuds were 5.1 games ahead of the Pears. Today they’re only 3.7 ahead.
.
Peshastin:W 2, L 0; 14 – 4.   I’d recruit Tom to say “Go Pears!” since I’m forbidden to post commentary today.
.
Kaline:  “W”, 8 – 11.  I’d predict the Drive would not take the Old Detroit draft pick away from the Pears because Kaline only slipped 0.2 games closer to the W’s.
.
Old Detroit: W, 4- 3. I’d bemoan something or other about the “Woeverines” — probably the thin and unreliable starting pitching.  Too bad you had to miss out on that, but Jamie knows best.
.
Canberra: W 2, L (-1); 8 – (-4). I’d probably make some kind of big deal about the Kangaroos’ good day. But it wouldn’t matter, because it’s still ninth place.
.
DC: L, 2 – 7.  I’d think long and hard about something uplifting to say about the Balk… Hey! I thought of something! Too bad I’m not allowed to post it.

  • I’m impressed that the Commissioner was participating in Serve Day while on sabbatical. That seems to be a true spirit of service.

    • As his leader, I was too. When I asked him why he said he thought he had to do it even while on sabbatical. He was a very diligent worker – even laying on the ground to count books. So not only did he not have to be there, he did the hard work (our site was the easiest site I’ve ever had in my 9 years of doing serve day – so yes, stacking books was the most difficult job we did).
