Paradise Lost, the Sequel: the trials of Joey Wendle

Yesterday I bemoaned the loss of paradise because I had made a tiny, correctable mistake in compiling one team’s statistics. Plus the Wolverines were no longer in first place.

But later in the morning I consoled myself: my team was working.  I had good, interesting players with upside at every position.  Max Muncy and Alen Hanson improved my infield… and were actually hitting.   And my pitching was fantastic — probably the best I’ve ever had.  And deep, too: Bumgarner was back and shining.  DeSclafani was back and … well, he was back. I could stash him with two other usable starters in the minors!

Then the news came: Shohei Ohtani had a strained UCL and might be out for months. I had worked for months to have the money for Ohtani.  He was my prized debutant. With him and Acuna on the DL, my entire April draft was on the shelf.

But within the hour I had regained my beatific composure.  After all, I had paired Shohei with Walker Buehler as #3 in my rotation.  Buehler was still there, and could carry that spot by himself. I might not even notice Ohtani was gone. As a pitcher.

Ohtani’s absence as a hitter was still a problem… until the Mariners announced they were brining up Dan Vogelbach, he of the 1.100 OPS in AAA!  Vogelbach is a gamble, but if he carried even 80% of his minor league stats into the majors, I wouldn’t miss Ohtani the hitter, either.

But then, last night before I went to bed, I learned that Walker Buehler had to leave his start early with a sore rib.  Probably a lat injury. OK, now I can seriously panic.  You can’t lose two starters in one day without panicking.  Panic is the only responsible reaction. Plus those back-up starters I bragged about have June ERA’s of 6.55, 7.20, and 27.00.  Oh, and Shane Greene triple chulked yesterday…

On the other hand, my grandsons are under my roof.  Maybe I can get through the weekend.

Portland: W, 9 – 5. (.318, .362, .591; 12 ip, 6 er). Chris Sale pitched 8 innings, 1 earned run. German Marquez gave half of that back: 4 ip, 5 er.
.
Brookland: W 2, L, (-1); 14 – 2. (.372, .413, .884;  6 ip, 0 er).  Must be nice. This is a better day than most teams will have this year.
.
Old Detroit:  “L”, 6 – 4. (.324, .395, .541;  12.3 ip, 10 er) Most of the pitching damage was done by Doug Fister (5 ip, 5 er) in AAA.
.
Canberra:  L, 2 – 5. (.152, .275, .303;  7 ip, 4 er).  Still in the race, with the pack at the top, just swapped places with the overachieving Outs.
.
Flint Hill: W, 6 – 2. (.341, .349, .780; 2 ip, 1 er).   Khris Davis and Yasmani Grandal put up identical lines: 2 for 4 with 2 homers.
.
Cottage: L, 1 – 4. (.161, .188, .355; 1 ip, 0 er). Just like the Tornados!  Mike Moustakas and Joc Pederson put up identical lines, too: 1 for 4 with 1 homer. Ok, half as good, but just as identical.
.
Pittsburgh: L, 5 – 7. (.237, .256, .395; 21.7 ip, 10 er). You wouldn’t know it from that rather thin batting line, but of the 10 Alleghenys who came to the plate, only two didn’t contribute anything positive, both of them enigmatic former hot prospects: Blake Swihart (0 for 3) and Jurickson Profar (0 for 4).
.
Kaline: 3 – 2. (.268, .333, .317;  7 ip, 1 er).  Joey Wendle had a frustrating day. He didn’t get to start. He came into the game in the bottom of the ninth with his team rallying to try to beat the over-achieving Mariners, the Rays still one run down.  Wendle walked. Then he tried to steal to get into scoring position… only to be betrayed by fellow Drive Mike Zunino, who threw him out at second. Something tells me the Wizard congratulated Zunino on the great play, and gently reminded Wendle of the special favor in which the M’s are held among the Drive fan base.
.
Haviland: L, 5 – 10. (.267, .283, .578; 14 ip, 12 er).  Decent hitting betrayed by Vincent Velaquez’ 3.7 ip, 10 earned run outing. Some near-triple chulks are bigger than others,
.
DC: L, 3 – 5. (.182, .250, .242;  1 ip, 0 er)  One of those minimalist, energy- and resource-conserving low-effort days. Resting up for… something.
.
Peshastin: “W”, 2- 6. (.160, .192, .200; 0 pitching) The Pears get a win out of this mess. They must have been living right.  In fact, we know they were — they had saved up nearly a half-win of good stuff, and cashed it in yesterday to make this work.
