Special Roseday Update: Dephamation!

Earlier today I taught you a new word:

Phamish: vt, to disillusion an opponent by having your erroneously excluded stats suddenly included in your team’s results.

I used it to tell you the moving story of how correcting the unjust omission of Tommy Pham’s stats helped the Rosebuds replace the Wolverines atop the EFL standings, like this:

EFL
TEAM WINS LOSSES PCT. GB RS RA
Portland Rosebuds 90 50 .644 752.8 547.7
Old Detroit Wolverines 91 51 .642 703.8 516.7
Brookland Outs 80 60 .574 9.8 746.1 649.9
Canberra Kangaroos 79 62 .560 11.7 652.0 582.6
Pittsburgh Alleghenys 75 66 .535 15.2 746.2 700.6
Flint Hill Tornadoes 74 68 .520 17.4 655.2 625.4
Haviland Dragons 71 70 .502 19.8 658.2 649.1
Cottage Cheese 67 73 .481 22.8 667.5 693.0
Kaline Drive 66 75 .468 24.6 610.5 652.8
Peshastin Pears 65 75 .464 25.2 599.0 645.0
D.C. Balk 62 79 .437 29 614.4 696.4

.

I hesitate to revisit this scene, because I’m not sure how much drama you can handle in a day, but this is one media outlet which will never hide the truth from you.  I need to teach you another new word:

Dephamation, n.: the act of reversing a phamishment.

Earlier this afternoon  I received the following note from the Top Rosebud:

Is it me, or are the stats a day behind?

Mostly just trying to make sure I have my roster adjustments and needed.

Paxton pitched last night, but the stats page just show 5.3 innings from his first outing on 9/1.
I checked and he was right: his team’s pitching stats did not reflect Friday’s games. Nor did his hitting stats. Nor did the Wolverines’ hitting or pitching stats.  The database had not used Friday stats at all!
.
This immediately explained how the Cheese and the Outs could get exactly 0.0 runs scored and runs allowed: their stats had not changed, nor had their games played changed.  The latter was innocent — the NL Central-leading Cubs were rained out yesterday.  But the former was exceedingly suspicious. Until now: we know how it happened.
.
But now the problem was figuring out why the stats hadn’t updated.  I had proof that I had cut and pasted the BP stats, because I had the proper, updated stats in my batters and pitchers spreadsheet to which I paste that data.  I knew I had uploaded data to the database because Dave’s spiffy Daily Commissioner menu  keeps a record of what I’ve done. But somehow all my actions had not resulted in updated stats in the database.
.
I am still not sure what happened. But one of the tricks I use when Dave isn’t sitting right beside the computer to hold my hand is this: rename my update spreadsheet files so the database thinks they’re brand new, and upload those.  I used to do that almost every month, but things have improved and I can go a long time without trying to appease the database demon by sacrificing virgin spreadsheets.
.
Anyway — it worked! Our players have their proper, updated stats in the database now.
.
To help you see the changes, I hereby add to the calendar a new day: Roseday, September 7 1/2, which lasted from Midnight Friday PM. to Midnight Saturday A.M. The player stats that should have been recorded before I updated based on Friday’s games are hereby recorded as if they occurred on Roseday. And look what they did to the standings as of the end of play Roseday:
EFL after games of Roseday, September 7 1/2, 2018
Team Wins Losses Pct. GB RS RA
Old Detroit Wolverines 91 51 .644 712.7 518.4
Portland Rosebuds 90 50 .644 0.2 759.6 550.1
Brookland Outs 80 60 .574 10.1 746.1 649.9
Canberra Kangaroos 79 62 .560 12 652.5 582.9
Pittsburgh Alleghenys 75 66 .535 15.5 741.0 697.0
Flint Hill Tornadoes 74 68 .520 17.6 659.0 627.7
Haviland Dragons 70 71 .500 20.5 658.6 653.4
Cottage Cheese 67 73 .481 23.1 667.9 693.3
Kaline Drive 66 75 .469 24.8 610.2 650.6
Peshastin Pears 65 75 .464 25.4 599.1 644.4
D.C. Balk 61 80 .435 29.6 608.8 694.2

.

Old Detroit: DNP, 9 – 2, winning percentage up 0.002.

Portland: DNP, 7 – 2, winning percentage unchanged (to the third decimal)

Brookland: DNP, 0.0 – 0.0.  Again!?    There may be another shoe to fall, because this still seems improbable.

Canberra: DNP, 0.5 – 0.3.  Pct: unchanged

Pittsburgh: DNP, 5 – 4.  Pct: unchanged

Flint Hill: DNP, 4 – 2. Pct: unchanged

Haviland: W (-1), L 1; 0 – 4. Pct: down 0.002.

Cottage: DNP, 0.4 – 0.3.  Maybe Brookland really did hit the stability jackpot.  The Cheese show real, but very small, effects of players having appeared on Roseday.  Pct: unchanged.

Kaline: DNP, (- 0) – (-2). Pct: down 0.001.

Peshastin: DNP, 0 – (-1).  Pct. unchanged.

D.C. W (-1), L 1;  (-6) – (-2).  Pct: down 0.002.

.

I apologize for this untidiness.  We seem to keep discovering new ways that the database, BP, and I can make errors throwing the ball around.

.

On the other hand,  September may be a thriller of a  month with the Rosebuds and the Wolverines trading places repeatedly.  We did it twice just today!  The more excitment the better, right?
