Reflection on Reflections

In seminary, one of my professors admonished us to consider Scripture first as a way to more fully understand God, and then as a mirror reflecting back to us who we are, especially in light of what we learn about God. Jesus’ brother, James, said something similar in chapter 1 of his letter:

“23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”

In support of this notion, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard taught that when studying Scripture, we should imagine receiving a letter from a loved one written in a different language. Wanting to know what it said, we would use the best dictionaries and lexicons to decipher its meaning. But if that scholarly effort was mistaken for the main message of the letter, we would miss the deeper meaning of it – namely, the words of love written to us by our loved one.

What does all of this have to do with baseball?

This morning on Baseball Prospectus I read the following quote in an article by Nathan Grimm:

“I’m a box score addict. Like many, it’s how I really got into baseball at a more advanced level than just going to and enjoying the games themselves. If I’m on my phone during baseball season, it’s usually the thing I’m looking at. Some people can’t stop scrolling Facebook; I can’t stop checking box scores.”

Wow. If ever a quote has read me, reflected back to me my true nature, this is the one! Perhaps you can resonate.

Our iPhones now have the ability to reflect back to us the amount of time we spend on them (want to talk about loves?!?!), and during baseball season my screen time is an advertisement for MLB the app. But not because I am watching the games. No, my main drug (to use Grimm’s analogy) are box scores.

So much of the story of a game can be told in a simple box score. And today’s box scores – using advanced data including exit velocity and pitching velocity, launch angle and spin rate – only adds layers to the story old in those symmetrical lines filled with names and numbers.

But sometimes I wonder if my love of box scores impedes my ability to consider the beauty of the game itself. To draw on Kierkegaard’s analogy, am I missing the love letter being written for me (and for anyone who will slow down enough to watch a game) by seeing only the numerical product and not the art being performed nightly on the diamond?

I hope not.

Haviland: W(2); 11-3
AVG: 0.281 OBP: 0.410 SLG: 0.469 OPS: 0.879
ERA: 1.08 WHIP: 0.843

The Dragons only had one game yesterday, but due to commissioner error the day before, had 2 games added to their total today. And it was a good two days, led by newcomers Jonah Heim (1 HR) and Maikel Franco (2 for 4 with a 2B). The Dragon pitching continued to be strong, getting 8IP and giving up only 1ER. The Dragons have begun hotter than anyone expected and at this pace will be 4 games in first by the end of the April with a record of 24-4. Can they keep it up?

Old Detroit: W, 10-2
AVG: 0.314 OBP: 0.385 SLG: 0.657 OPS: 1.042
ERA: 1.29 WHIP: 1.000

Yesterday the Wolverines’ owner tried to convince us he was sick, but in a good way (you know, like the kids say!). Excuse me if I might add that seeing this line actually makes me the real kind of sick. The Wolverines got production from every hitter but one (Profar was the lone holdout), on their way to OPSing 1.042. Byron Buxton returned from his actual sickness to hit a HR, Carlos Correa hit his first of the season, and Nate Lowe added 2 more. Marcus Stroman and David Phelps, both Rule 5 picks, I believe, threw 7 innings and gave up 2 runs.

Flint Hill: W, 6-1
AVG: 0.229 OBP: 0.270 SLG: 0.486 OPS: 0.756 PA: 37
ERA: 2.08 WHIP: 0.846

The Tornadoes kept pace with the league stalwarts, led once again by great pitching and some ok hitting. Pitching for the Tornadoes were Darvish (6IP and 1ER), German Marquez (6IP and 3ER) and Keone Kela (1IP and 0ER). Flint Hill is tied with the Dragons for fewest runs allowed through the first several games, however the Dragons have a better team ERA since they have played 1 more game. Bo Bichette’s Bat (BBB) finally made some noise, and Mookie did something (2 hits, 1 HR) other than getting thrown out on the bases.

DC: W, 11-4
AVG: 0.300 OBP: 0.429 SLG: 0.750 OPS: 1.179 PA: 49
ERA: 4.29 WHIP: 1.746 IP: 6.3

The Balk had perhaps the best offensive day in the league (depending on how you define best). As a team they hit 5 HRs on the day, three of them coming off the bat of Ryan McMahon in that thin Colorado air. McMahon tallied 14 total bases yesterday for a Rockies record. His Rockies teammate, Sam Hilliard, chipped in his own HR, and Pete Alonso got in on the HR fun, too. The pitching wasn’t stellar, but who cares when you score 11 runs?

Pittsburgh: DNP, 5-(-4)
AVG: 0.324 OBP: 0.368 SLG: 0.794 OPS: 1.163 PA: 38
ERA: 3.51 WHIP: 0.519 IP: 7.7

Pittsburgh didn’t play yesterday but managed to climb a good deal in the standings thanks to erasing some replacement innings and hitting the ball very well. Like the Balk, the Alleghenys contributed 5 HRs – one each from Swanson, Smith, Robert, Vazquez and Muncy. The pitching was also good, especially since it erased a fair number of replacement innings. Luke Weave pitched the most innings of the bunch, throwing 5.2 innings and giving up 3 runs.

Portland: “L,” 3-(-1)
AVG: 0.220 OBP: 0.250 SLG: 0.360 OPS: 0.610 PA: 52
ERA: 3.67 WHIP: 1.156 IP: 14.7

The Rosebuds also erased some replacement innings, though it didn’t turn into an EFL win as it did for Pittsburgh. Dylan Bundy led the way with 6IP, including 10 Ks on the way to giving up 2ER. The other two pitchers thought Bundy’s line looked good, and so they too gave up 2ER, though not quite getting to 6IP each. Nick Senzel collected 3 hits (all singles), and Travis Shaw and Dylan Carlson added a HR each.

Kaline: W (0), L (2); 7-11
AVG: 0.209 OBP: 0.277 SLG: 0.419 OPS: 0.695 PA: 47
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 1.000 IP: 2.0

This missed game yesterday by the Commissioner really showed up in negative ways for the Drive today, especially in terms of replacement innings. Aaron Judge had a great game, getting 3 hits including a HR. Omar Narvaez also added a HR to go along with a 1B and a BB. There were only 2IP for the team, but both were scoreless.

Canberra: L, 1-2
AVG: 0.214 OBP: 0.267 SLG: 0.429 OPS: 0.695
ERA: 2.70 WHIP: 1.100 IP: 10.0

The Roos pitching was very good yesterday; however, their hitting was not. Casey Mize, Dane Dunning and Ryan Thompson combined for 10IP while giving up 3ER. That’s exactly the kind of line that will lead to a win in the EFL, as long as some offense is garnered by the hitters. But one run scored did not do the trick. Mike Trout and Kyle Tucker both hit HRs, but somehow that only equated to 1 run scored (got to love EFL formulas!).

Bellingham: W(1), L (-1); 3-0
AVG: 0.290 OBP: 0.313 SLG: 0.645 OPS: 0.958 PA: 32
ERA: 9.00 WHIP: 4.000

A great day for the Cascades yesterday! Ronald Acuna, Jr. hit 2 HRs and Edwin Rios added another. Rhys Hoskins and Kevin Newman each added a double, and though they only got 1IP (AJ Minter), it was enough to hold their opponent scoreless for a nice day.

Cottage: L, 3-10
AVG: 0.154 OBP: 0.313 SLG: 0.231 OPS: 0.543 PA: 65
ERA: 18.00 WHIP: 4.000 IP: 1.0

Well, the Cheese would rather not think about yesterday, I imagine. Bad hitting and bad pitching led to an unsightly loss and a nearly 1.5 game swing in the downward direction in the standings. There were some bright spots – Trea Turner (finally getting to play) hit a HR, Alex Verdugo hit a 2B to help the Red Sox win, and Shohei Ohtani chipped in 2 hits.

Peshastin: “L,” 4-3
AVG: 0.237 OBP: 0.302 SLG: 0.263 OPS: 0.565 PA: 43
ERA: 1.13 WHIP: 1.000 IP: 8.0

The Pears bad luck continued yesterday, earning a loss even though they outscored their opponent. Pear pitching was excellent, as you can see, led by Freddy Peralta’s 5IP and 0ER. The hitters were led by 2 hits apiece from Tom Murphy and Ryan Mountcastle, though the batters did accumulate a total of 14 Ks on the day.
