As Long as You Can

There’s an old Quaker story about a conversation between George Fox and William Penn. The conversation centered on Penn’s desire to carry a sword on his belt even after he had converted to Quakerism. In the earliest days of the movement joining the Quakers meant embracing non-violence, and so you can see why Penn was concerned he may need to lose his blade forever.

Yet, he didn’t want to. And so, as anyone may who is attempting to tease out the boundary line for what is acceptable what isn’t, he asked Fox if he could still carry his sword.

Fox’s answer? Carry it as long as you can.

I would have enjoyed seeing the look on Penn’s face upon hearing this reply. Expecting one answer and getting another, especially when the answer is presumably in one’s favor, elicits a kind of joy that is difficult to feign. Fox’s point was that Penn should respond only to the leading of the Holy Spirit when making decisions, and not lean on the advice or direction of others. Though we might quibble a bit with this advice due to its devaluation of communal discernment, we can certainly relate to moments of unexpected joy. Especially in the EFL.

(Editor’s note: many historians believe this story to be hagiography, but for illustrative purposes its historicity hardly matters).

The first few weeks of the baseball season certainly usher in moments of joy, simply due to baseball games being played on a regular basis. After months of sitting through winter weather wishing for baseball season to begin, it finally does, and the sheer presence of it is enough to brighten any mood.

The beginning of the baseball season also brings with it many unexpected surprises in terms of statistical performances. Sometimes these performances are cringe-worthy, and you search for any semblance of proof that the mediocrity, and in some cases the downright putridity, exhibited by your team or your favorite players is temporary.

For example, the 2021 Boston Red Sox began their season by losing three straight games to tbe Baltimore Orioles – a team projected to win 66 games by FanGraphs, and even worse – the only team who, based on projections, has a 0% chance of making the playoffs.

But this column this morning is not about those abysmal starts – and, in case you care, the Red Sox have reeled off 6 straight wins since – no, instead it is about those starts which are, for each of us, creating an unexpected joy which we hope will last much longer than 10 games, but if not, will be fodder for good memories in days, weeks, and months to come.

Though these performances may be chalked up to small sample sizes (SSS), they may also be season-long statistical studs (SSS). And, because all that matters at this point is how you feel about your players, YOU – yes, you! – get to decide which category your player(s) fall into.

And, like Fox suggested to Penn I might also suggest to you: believe it (carry it) as long as you can.

Old Detroit: W, 8-2
AVG: 0.273 OBP: 0.351 SLG: 0.576 OPS: 0.927 PA: 37
ERA: 2.25 WHIP: 1.750 IP: 4.0

Wolverine management wanted to be sure I noticed the excellent days contributed by both Rafael Devers and Byron Buxton (combined 5 for 9 with 1 2B and 3 HR). To some, unsolicited advice might be perturbing. In this instance, charity has won over. Buxton’s start to the season is certainly one to categorize as an SSS.

Haviland: W, 4-(-1)
AVG: 0.333 OBP: 0.450 SLG: 0.576 OPS: 1.026 PA: 40
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 0.377 IP: 5.3

Before the season the Dragon management loudly (well, as loudly as he can which compared to others is simply a normal volume) proclaimed that his team was terrible. So far, it seems to be the kind of terrible one experiences while standing the presence of the angel Gabriel. The Dragons’ SSS might be Maikel Franco, chosen with nearly the last pick of the FA draft, who yesterday contributed a line of 2 for 4 with a BB and a HR, might be the Dragon SSS.

DC: W, 6-2
AVG: 0.263 OBP: 0.333 SLG: 0.474 OPS: 0.807 PA: 21
ERA: 1.34 WHIP: 1.343 IP: 6.7

The Balk inched their way above the Tornadoes into third place yesterday, which seemed inevitable. Though he didn’t get in on the HR barrage in yesterday’s Red Sox game, Xander Bogaerts did contribute 3 hits, including a 2B. And Bryce Harper added a laser HR to the Balk total. Though he only contributed a 1B and a SB yesterday, Balk management might deem Ryan McMahon his SSS, he with 10.86 RC/G.

Flint Hill: W, 3-2
AVG: 0.130 OBP: 0.286 SLG: 0.174 OPS: 0.460 PA: 28
ERA: 2.31 WHIP: 1.368 IP: 11.7

Were it not for their pitching staff, the Tornadoes would be hanging out much lower in the EFL standings. The offense has been putrid, and it doesn’t help that two of the expected top performers did not play yesterday (Betts and Rendon). But the Tornado SSS did play, Anthony DeSclafani, and threw 6 IP giving up 0 ER.

Pittsburgh: DNP, (-4)-(-3)
AVG: 0.185 OBP: 0.214 SLG: 0.259 OPS: 0.474 PA: 28
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 0.286 IP: 7.0

I believe I figured out the Allegheny fluctuation yesterday and today. It seems to have been a data entry error in the MLB standings yesterday. However, the Allegheny line also lends some credence to the undulations they are experiencing, due to a poor offensive line and an amazing pitching line. It looked for a moment that we were going to have our second EFL no-hitter in one week, but Luke Weaver gave up a hit in the 7th and then was pulled. Pittsburgh’s SSS is undoubtedly Christian Vazquez, who’s current RC/G is over 12. I read somewhere yesterday that the Catcher position is leading the MLB in HRs so far this season, which is definitely an SSS and one I hope becomes an SSS.

Kaline: W (1), L (-1), 1-(-4)
AVG: 0.261 OBP: 0.393 SLG: 0.348 OPS: 0.741
ERA: 1.23 WHIP: 0.685

The Drive had a good day, jumping over both the Roos and the Cascades (difficult to leap over those two things, but do it they did!). They were led by excellent pitching from three pitchers, most notably JT Brubaker who gave up one run over 5 and 2/3 IP. The Drive have two SSS with a RC/G over 19 (!): Jesse Winker and Omar Narvaez. Yesterday’s hero, Brubaker, might able fit the bill, with an ERA of 1.94 over two starts.

Bellingham: W(1), L(-1); 0-0
AVG: 0.219 OBP: 0.257 SLG: 0.438 OPS: 0.695
ERA: 3.08 WHIP: 1.538

The Cascades had a swing of 2 games without a single run scored or given up – impressive! Their best performances came from Brett Anderson (5IP and 1ER) and Ronald Acuna, Jr. (3 for 5 with a HR). Their SSS might be Kevin Gausman who over two starts has a 1.31 ERA.

Portland: W(2), L(-1); 4-1
AVG: 0.194 OBP: 0.286 SLG: 0.333 OPS: 0.619
ERA: 2.03 WHIP: 0.902 IP: 13.3

How about a three game swing? Sadly, it only resulted in a .1 gain on the leading Wolverines. The pitchers were where the magic happened yesterday, with excellent starts from Mike F. and Logan Allen (12IP and 2ER combined). The hitting was not great, outside of Travis Shaw who went 1 for 2 with a BB and a HR. Shaw may be the SSS (an OPS over .900) or perhaps Jon Gray, who has an ERA of 1.54 over 2 starts.

Canberra: L, 5-10
AVG: 0.200 OBP: 0.200 SLG: 0.467 OPS: 0.667
ERA: 9.00 WHIP: 2.250

The Roos had as bad day, and subsequently dropped 4 spots in the standings, just one day after receiving public praise from the commissioner. The main culprit was the pitching, namely Colin McHugh who gave up 3 runs in 1 inning. Is it possible that Mike Trout could be the SSS of the Roos? He is slashing .414/.564/.828 for a RC/G of 23.15 – incredible!

Cottage: “L,” 9-8
AVG: 0.407 OBP: 0.467 SLG: 0.815 OPS: 1.281
ERA: 5.29 WHIP: 1.176

The pitching-starved Cheese got more bad news yesterday, with Adrian Morejon leaving his start in the first inning due to forearm tightness. Hopefully that didn’t overshadow the good things happening in the batter’s box, though. A team OPS of 1.281 was due to a trio of youngsters (McKinstry, Verdugo and Arozarena) hitting a HR and a total of 11 hits over 27 ABs. The Cheese (and their favorite MLB team the Dodgers) have to hope McKinstry’s hot start is not an SSS but rather an SSS. He has an OPS over 1.000!

Peshastin: W(-1), L(2); (-1)-11
AVG: 0.100 OBP: 0.122 SLG: 0.200 OPS: 0.322
ERA: 18.00 WHIP: 4.000

The Pears fell to the ground once again, this time due to an ERA of 18.00 and a team OPS of .322 on the day. Ozzie Albies contributed a HR, but their 9 batters amasses 17 Ks on the day, with 4 of them getting a Hat Trick (Haniger, Nunez, Murphy and Mountcastle). The Pear SSS is Trevor Rogers, who has an ERA of 1.80 over 2 starts.

  • The painting at the top of the column is “The Peaceable Kingdom” by Elias Hicks. Although I’m technically no longer a Quaker, we have a print of one of Hicks’ Peaceable Kingdom paintings hanging in our home. And the story about Penn and Fox is one that I enjoy telling to folks in our church, who of course have never heard it, not being Quakers. So thanks for including a bit of our heritage in a baseball column. Not many baseball fantasy columnists will do things like that.
