Hy(pear)ion?

Years ago, while a college student (my 20th reunion is next year…how old does that make me feel? Very old) I decided I would like to become a crossword puzzler. It wasn’t too much of a surprise because my father, whom I respected and admired (still do, for the record), was an ardent puzzler himself. And I liked words. As a child I would read the dictionary while sitting on the toilet and felt as though my vocabulary was proficient enough to be able to excel at completing a daily labyrinth-like lexicon.

It didn’t take very many attempts before I realized that crossword puzzles have their own language, rife with frequent yet obscure clues that tend to be repeated across multiple puzzles. One of those oft-used clues was (and perhaps still is?),”Type of pear.”

Up until this point I had assumed there were three types of pears – not-quite ripe, ripe, and rotten. But I could never make those answers fit into the boxes provided in the puzzle. And so I called my dad, who graciously informed me there were indeed multiple types of pears, but the ones found most often in crossword puzzles were Bosc and Anjou. Sure enough, one of those two answers (with an occasional Asian pear reference) would help me to come nearer to the completion of puzzles.

However, this morning I discovered that not only are there those three types of pears, there are actually 10 different types! You can search the image above to see many of them, all differentiated by their crispness and sweetness.

But today I discovered an 11th type of pear – this one filled with helium and not meant to be eaten, but rather admired, a thing at which to be gawked. This is the Peshastin Pear.

It was only two days ago. Yes, I did the archival research just like Ron did, but mine did not take me back years – merely hours to find what I was looking for. And I did find it, though it is still difficult to believe:

On April 12th, 2021, the Pears were in last place in the EFL with a record of 3 wins and 7 losses, 5.3 games behind the leader (who on that day was, like today, the Wolverines). This morning, as Dave’s wonderful database spit out all of the sweet and crispy numbers the only EFL member named after a fruit somehow managed to defy gravity and now look:

The Pears are in 4th place with a record of 8-3, a mere 1.3 games behind the Wolverines. That means in 2 days (2 DAYS!) the Pears gained 4 games on first place on the strength of 5 wins and -4 losses.

These Peshastin Pears are hardy but light, and I, for one, am not sure I like them.

EFL Standings for 2021

Old Detroit: L, 5-7
AVG: 0.283 OBP: 0.377 SLG: 0.370 OPS: 0.747 PA: 53
ERA: 4.78 WHIP: 1.327

Despite losing yesterday, the Wolverines climbed back into first place (mostly due to an awful Dragon day. The Wolverines were led by JP Crawford’s 3 hits – oh, wait…Crawford is on the bench. Scratch that. The Wolverines were led by Tommy Edman (2 for 5) and Byron Buxton (2 for 5 with a 2B) on offense, but their pitching was undone a but by Jameson Taillon’s 5ER over 3.7IP. Nevertheless, I am certain they are pleased to once again be atop the standings, this time with a lead larger than 1 game.

Flint Hill: “L,” 5-5
AVG: 0.257 OBP: 0.308 SLG: 0.543 OPS: 0.851 PA: 39
ERA: 15.88 WHIP: 3.529 IP: 1.7

Prized Tornado pitcher Blake Snell didn’t make it out of the first inning last night (a grace bestowed upon the Tornadoes since he had already surrendered 3ER in 2/3 of an inning) and that was just enough to make it difficult to get a win. Bo Bichette, Paul Goldschmidt and Nomar Mazara contributed 2 hits each and Mookie Betts returned from a 5 game absence (stiff back) to his his first HR.

Haviland: W(-1), L(2); 2-14
AVG: 0.227 OBP: 0.277 SLG: 0.295 OPS: 0.572 PA: 47
ERA: 14.03 WHIP: 2.727 IP: 7.7

Don Mattingly and Bob Melvin were not as gracious to the Dragons as Jayce Tingler was to the Tornadoes. Those two managers left their pitchers in to accrue several innings of bad pitching, adding 14 runs allowed to the Dragon monthly total which before yesterday was a league-leading 20. That is precisely how one has a 3 game swing in one day. The hitting was not as bad as the pitching, but it didn’t really do much to distract anyone from that pitching line.

Peshastin: W(2), L(-1); 9-(-2)
AVG: 0.308 OBP: 0.341 SLG: 0.667 OPS: 1.008 PA: 41
ERA: 2.25 WHIP: 0.667

The EFL is not a zero-sum game in which one teams’ losses equal another teams’ wins – but I do find it ironic that the team following the Dragons abysmal day are the Pears, who ostensibly took the two wins the Dragons lost and gave them the one loss they lost. How did they do it? Excellent hitting, led by Ryan Mountcastle and Mitch Haniger (7 for 14 combined with 3 2Bs), and excellent pitching, led by Justus Sheffield and Jack Flaherty (11IP, 3ER).

DC: W(-2), L(0); (-11)-(-6)
AVG: 0.222 OBP: 0.255 SLG: 0.311 OPS: 0.566 PA: 47
ERA: 2.86 WHIP: 1.429 IP: 6.3

The Mets (who have played 7 games) took over the top spot from the Phillies (who have played 11 games) in the NKL East, and so both the Balk and the Roos had their stats suppressed a bit today. Martin Perez threw 5IP and gave up 2 runs, and the formerly maligned Joey Gallo responded with a 2 for 5 day.

Portland: W, 10-7
AVG: 0.324 OBP: 0.478 SLG: 0.559 OPS: 1.037
ERA: 4.62 WHIP: 1.538 IP: 11.7

An excellent day at the plate overcame an average day on the mound, and the Rosebuds added a win and climbed .6 games closer to first. Dylan Carlson had 3 hits and Corey Seager added his first HR of the season. Luis Urias went 1 for 1 with a HR and 3 BBs. Dylan Bundy went 7IP and gave uop 2ER, but the other two pitchers didn’t do as well, giving up 4 runs in 4 innings.

Canberra: W(-1), L(-1); (-14)-(-9)
AVG: 0.243 OBP: 0.300 SLG: 0.324 OPS: 0.624
ERA: 8.49 WHIP: 1.321 IP: 5.3

Like the Balk, the Mets taking over first suppressed some stats for the Roos. Tommy La Stella went 3 for 3 with a 2B and Vladito went 2 for 4 with a 2B and a BB. Jake Odorizzi unfortunately tossed a stinker, giving up 5ER in 3.3IP.

Pittsburgh: L, 3-4
AVG: 0.175 OBP: 0.214 SLG: 0.425 OPS: 0.639 PA: 42
ERA: 2.73 WHIP: 1.515 IP: 3.3

Max Muncy added his second HR of the season along with a 2B and a BB to do all that he could to will the Alleghenys to a win. But the pitchers just couldn’t muster up the longevity needed, though their 3 innings of work were very good. Despite losing, Pittsburgh managed to gain some ground on the Wolverines.

Bellingham: W, 9-6
AVG: 0.344 OBP: 0.447 SLG: 0.594 OPS: 1.041
ERA: 5.63 WHIP: 1.250 IP: 8.0

Look at that offensive line! Marcell Ozuna went 3 for 4 with a HR and a BB, Rowdy Tellez chipped in another HR, and DJLM went 2 for 3 with a 2B and a BB. Kevin Gausman, however, had his first bad game of the season, giving up 5ER in 6IP.

Kaline: L, 4-11
AVG: 0.222 OBP: 0.293 SLG: 0.444 OPS: 0.737
ERA: 9.00 WHIP: 2.091 IP: 11.0

Max Fried fried the Drive’s chances of winning yesterday, giving up 7ER in 4 innings, while John Means meant to do better, and he did, but he still gave up 3 runs in 5 innings. That proved to be an insurmountable obstacle, and the Drive hitters chose not to even try, to be honest. Bobby Dalbec collected 2 doubles and Yuli Gurriel added 2 singles, while Hunter Renfroe and Willson Contreras added a HR each.

Cottage: W, 9-5
AVG: 0.333 OBP: 0.423 SLG: 0.489 OPS: 0.912
ERA: 1.96 WHIP: 1.304 IP: 4.6

Feeling left out of the .500 air, the Cheese are trying their best to eke over the line. And yesterday was a great start! 6 different batters collected multiple hits, with Brandon Nimmo and Shohei Ohtani collecting 3 apiece. Taijuan Walker continued his good start to the season, tossing 4.3 innings and giving up 1 run. If the Cheese can replicate these numbers today, they may make it so every EFL team is above .500.

  • Also, someone smarter than me will have to explain why the standings aren’t ordered by winning percentage, because if so, the Balk would be in second today. But that is above my pay grade.

  • The Pear ownership group prefers Bartletts, but the real world Peshastin warehouse used to boast that it was the world’s largest D’Anjou packing plant. So we have a special place in our stomachs for D’Anjous. Why you would illustrate an article about pears with a picture from Chelan is mysterious.

    • I’m clearly a Pear novice, so the choice of Chelan over, say, Peshastin was purely unintentional. However, if it causes you to take a few steps lower in the standings then I meant it!
