The Commissioner Displays His Best Bedside Manner

Dear EFL Answer Man:

I think that the Cheese may have set the record yesterday for the worst day ever in EFL history.

— Cottage Fan Base

Most of you probably never realized the pastoral element in the EFL Commissioner’s job.  As I make my rounds, I routinely encounter people suffering from depression, anxiety, and/or despair.

You can’t see the caption to the cartoon I used to illustrate this article.  It says something like “Just take the lollipop and get out of here.”  While I admire the doctor’s clarity, I have chosen to be a kinder, gentler helper to discouraged owners.  I have to somehow empathize with them and let them know their teams’ terrible performance has no affect on other people’s view of them, and that we value them no matter what their win-lost record.

I’ve been commissioner for almost 13 years now, so I must be pretty good at what I do.  Watch a master at work:

Dear Cottage Fan:

I see you are suffering from depression, anxiety, and/or despair. I somehow empathize with you.  Your team’s terrible performance is pretty much what we expected when you came into the league. We value you highly just as you are.

Oh, and by the way, the word “that” could be eliminated from your sentence with no loss of meaning.

Stay well!

Another approach would be to dispute the accuracy of the writer’s claim that the Cheese had the worst day ever in EFL history. But to do that we’d need some data.

Here’s another draft of my letter back to the Cheese Fan:
Dear Cheese Fan:
So you got shut out 7-0. It was a pretty bad day at the Cottage. You took a loss, and the only two teams behind you got solid wins (including the expansion team), so I can see why you feel bad. But it’s a close thing: the Wolverines and Dragons — the 1st and 2d place teams to start the day — lost almost as badly. And unless there is something else buried in the data, it’s unlikely that a single – loss day was the worst ever.  Go outside, take a deep breath, and get a grip.
— Answer Man
Hmm.  Guess we’d better take a look at the stats to see if something buried in the data might justify the Cheesy patty melt.
Old Detroit: .196, .212, .216;  10 ip,  4 er.
Portland: .255, .280, .426; 8.3 ip, 0 er.
Haviland: .265, .357, .382; 5 ip, 5 er.
Pittsburgh: .267, .313, .333; 2.7 ip, 2 er.
Peshastin:  .195, .233, .268;  2 ip, 1 er.
Canberra: .333, .381, .513; 7.7 ip, 1 er.
Flint Hill: .136, .269, .227; 8.7 ip, 0 er.
Cottage: .077, .077, .192;  1.7 ip, 2er.
Kaline: .265, .286, .382;  13 ip, 2 er.
DC:  .261, .320, .348, 15.7 ip, 7 er.
Here it’s clearer that the Cheese had a worse day than any other EFL team Wednesday.  But still — the worst EFL day ever?
Dear Cheese Fan:
That .269 OPS is pretty bad. But if you paid better attention you’d have noticed that there’s already been a line this year more like .040, .040, .040.  We’ve had a -2 W, 3 L day already this year. You need to be more sensitive to those around you.  You need to somehow empathize with them and let them know their teams’ terrible performance has no affect on other people’s view of them, and that we value them no matter what their win-lost record.

Thank you so much, kind sir. Your encouragement had a huge effect (note that I, unlike you, can spell this word correctly) on my team. Why, every Cheese hitter got at least one hit yesterday! And Polanco got four!

Would that all commissioners had bedside manners like yours.
