League Updates

Hillbilly Elegy?

After the draft Saturday Allegheny management hung around for a bit to bemoan his team’s suffering. “August has gone so badly,” he wailed, “I’m not even sure the Alleghenys are still in first place!”

.

As you can imagine, I was deeply moved by this Pittsburgh plaint. After all the suffering the Allegheny franchise has been through — I mean, after last year, the A’s haven’t even won half our league championships! — to have this additional tragedy of possibly not being in first…

.

I could not let this poor team suffer any more.  So this morning, after I updated everyone’s BP rosters (tentatively, pending last minute moves before tonight’s midnight roster deadline and last minute proofing on my part), I looked at each team’s performance from Aug 1 to yesterday. If we assume each team played 5 games (needing at least 35 ip and 151 PA to avoid replacements), here is a VERY ROUGH estimate of how each team has done so far in August:

Haviland:  168 PA, .232, .310, .470; 52.3 ip, 11 er, 1.89 era.  Est; W 4, L 1

DC: 135 PA, .362, .397, .638(+ reps) ; 31 ip, 3 er, 0.87 (+ reps).  Est W 4, L 1.

Old Detroit; 191 PA, .292, .375, .500; 38.7 ip, 15 er, 3.49 ERA.  Est.  W 3, L 2.

Portland: 260 PA, .233, .326, .441; 42.7 IP, 19 ER, 4.01 ERA.  Est. W 2.5, L 2.5

Cottage: 235 PA, .239, .336, .400; 32 ip, 14 er , 3.94 9 (+reps).  Est W 2.5, L 2.5

Kaline: 236 PA, .248, .289, .369; 47.0 ip, 23 er, 4.40.  Est.  W 2, L 3

Canberra: 203 PA, .305,  .348, .532;  35 ip, 26 er, 6.69 ERA.  Est W 2, L 3

Flint Hill:  242  PA,  .198, .263, .315; 55.7 ip, 16 er, 2.59 ERA.  Est. W 2,  L 3.

Pittsburgh:  221 PA, .204, .276, .343; 55.3 ip, 28 er, 4.55 ERA. Est. W 2, L 3

Peshastin: 174 PA, .244, .305, .500; 25 ip, 18 er, 6.48 ERA (+ reps).  Est: W 2, L 3.

.

Whew!  That was close!  But I’m pretty sure the A’s are still where God intended them to be.  So far.

.

The Alleghenys may have slipped a game, but they started the month 1.7 games ahead of the Cheese, 2.7 up on the Tornadoes, and 2.8 up on the Dragons.  All of them have probably gained, but none of them are likely to have caught the A’s.  Yet.

.

You can all sleep comfortably… at least until today’s box scores start filling up with  more  Allegheny woe.

  • Thank you so much, Mr. Benevolent Commissioner. I’ll try to get a grip on the weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth. Your research was even more helpful than the hanky you gave me yesterday.
