The Diary of Myles Thomas

Screen Shot 2016-04-16 at 9.28.16 AMIf you like old-time baseball, and you haven’t seen ESPN’s new series “The ’27 Yankees”, you’re in for a real treat. Actually you’re in for a real treat even if you have seen it – because it is planned to run all year. They’re recreating the entire season, day by day – so today, for example, you can read the account of what happened on April 15, 1927.

The story is quoted from the diary of Myles Thomas, an obscure Yankee player who was a member of that ’27 team – but actually there was no diary. It’s being written as fiction from history, and the author has done a fantastic research job. He’s a good writer, too.

Along with the diary you get to read the actual newspaper accounts of the games from the New York Times files. Wow – sportswriting ain’t what it used to be. Check out the clip posted at left.

Along with the baseball there are all sorts of stories about the people, places, and events of the time – with appropriate links and lots of graphics. It’s a fascinating trip back into the Roaring 20’s. A great era to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there. It makes me glad to live in the place and time where I am.

There’s a link on the MLB page at ESPN, and here is where it will take you. Try it, you’ll like it.
