Muncey, Vogey and the Gurriels: The Moral of their Story

Muncy, Vogey and the Gurriels.  Sounds a little like a band.  But if it was a band, it would be better as just Muncy (or Vogey) and the Gurriels. So it isn’t a band.

It’s a victims list.  These are players whose names were changed by Baseball Prospectus, and we didn’t notice right away.  So for a while our defense ratings weren’t being read for these players.

Let’s start with Max Muncy. Last year they were calling him Maxwell, but sometime at or before the season started they switched to Max. I don’t remember when I noticed, but it was apparently early in superlong April.  I adjusted his name to get the offensive stats in correctly, but did not think to do the same for his defense.

Last night, I noticed the Wolverines’ team defense was 26.something.  This was impossible — it put my team defense BELOW replacement. I only have one defender below replacement (Devers) and I have 0 replacement plate appearances.  So this couldn’t be true.

I asked Dave to help me find the problem. Dave, despite being preoccupied with other nagging issues like survival, ran a test. It showed the database assigning a team defense rating of 0 to second base. With some further looking Dave discovered that Max and Maxwell Muncy are not recognized as the same person in the database. He changed Maxwell to Max in the part of the database that gives us credit for our defense, and just this morning the Wolverines’ team defense blossomed to 33.2 for May (so far — this is a dynamic number).

I realized that Muncy was not the only player whose name BP changed this year. At the beginning of May, BP changed Dan Vogelbach to Daniel, Yulieski Gurriel to Yuli, and Lourdes Gurriel, Jr.  to just plain old Lourdes Gurriel.  Sure enough, Vogelbach’s defense was being treated as a 0 (when he’s actually rated 2.8 at 1b). The W’s will get another, smaller defense boost when Dave finishes his work.

For the Gurriels, we discovered that Yuli’s defensive allocations didn’t even take for May, so Tom will need to tell us what they were supposed to be in his original allocation.  Lourdes Gurriel has not played in MLB in May, so the Outs will be unaffected.

Here’s a sad thing for the Wolverines:  Muncy was treated as if his defense was 0 in April, too.  That cut about 6 points off the Wolverines’ April defense ratings, probably enough to cost them at least a game in the standings for the month, maybe more. (April was a super-long month, and when the defense ratings get down under 30, each point you lose costs a team more than a game over the season.).

.

However, there is nothing the Wolverines can do about that.  Everyone has built their strategy on the April results.  I’m not sure we can fix a closed month without messing things up.  I had all of a very long month to spot the problem and alert league officials.  My failure to examine my team stats carefully is my problem.  It’s like not calling “UNO” before the next person plays, or (Settlers Reference Warning) not giving away the boot before making the play that puts you ahead. The Wolverines will have to limp through the rest of the season with the weight of that lost win (or more) on their shoulders, a constant lesson, the moral of the story of Muncy, Vogey and the Gurriels:

.

BE ALERT!

Pay attention to your team!

If a problem can be caught

it’s up to you to catch it

before the month is over.

Flint Hill: W 0, L 2; 15 – 31. (34 PA, .464, .559, .571; 7 ip, 12 er, 15.43 ERA).  During a doubleheader required when the Yankees passed the Rays in the AL East, Xander Bogaerts went 3 for 4 with a double to lead a band of 6 Tornados OPSing 1.000 or better.  But it wasn’t enough to overcome Myles Mikolas’ nasty quintuple chulk (1.3 ip, 7 er) nor Jon Gray’s ugly attempt to help (4.7 ip, 5 er).  This cut the Tornados’ Total Dominance Rating from 94.3 to 77.4, or 18%.
You don’t know what a Total Dominance Rating is?  It’s the  total of all the other teams’ games behind  your team. So you add 0.7 (Portland) plus 4.3 (Canberra),  etc. all the way to 11.8 (DC).   I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it.  I’ve known about it for almost five minutes already.
.
Portland: W, 3 – 2. (57 PA, .250, .316, .481;  5.3 ip, 0 er, 0 era). Billy McKinney went 4 for 5 with two doubles to beat Bogaerts by one across the board, and Merrill Kelly finally paid off with 5.3 scoreless innings to give the Rosebuds a 1.3 games boost in the standings.  I suppose the boost could have been slightly bigger had McKinney been allocated at more than 0%.
It’s not hard to compute the Rosebuds’ Dominance Rating, since there are 10 teams below them, and you know the ‘Buds are 0.7 games less in front of them than the Tornados are.  That translates to 7 fewer Dominance Points over the rest of the league.  And instead of dominating themselves by 0.7 games, they are being dominated by 0.7, so you have to subtract another 1.4.  That gives you a Rosebuds Dominance Rating of 69.0.  It’s not a TOTAL Dominance Rating — they don’t totally dominate because one of their rivals dominates them.
Canberra: L, 0 – 8. (33 PA, .152, .152, .242; 7.7 ip, 6 er, 7.04 ERA). On a day of paltry offense, while others were partly liberating themselves from Tornado Domination, Joey Lucchesi pitched 7 strong innings, allowing only 2 earned runs.  But a small nonuple chulk (0.3 ip, 3 er) from Kyle Barraclough and triple chulk (0.3 ip, 1 er) by Brad Wieck left the gates open for a bunch of opponent runs.  Canberra’s Dominance Rating is 25.8, according to the voices in my head.
Old Detroit: W 2, L 0; 18 – 3. (57 PA, .327, .386, .635; 0.7 ip, 2 er, 27.00 ERA).  The Muncy Redemption coincided nicely with a great day at the plate (5 homers! Including one by Jacob Nottingham in his Wolverines debut!) to help us all look past Dan Jennings’ latest mishap (0.7 ip, 2 er, a neat triple chulk twice the size of Brad Wieck’s).  The Wolverines’ Dominance Rating is a whopping 15, the first time it’s been positive since about the first of April.
.
Pittsburgh: “L”, 6 – 5. (53 PA, .213, .315, .511; 10 ip, 6 er, 5.40 ERA). Derek Holland nearly ruined the day with his 1 ip, 4 er quadruple chulk.  But Frankie Montas responded with 8.7 brilliant innings with 2 earned runs, Pete (probably Peter before long) Alonso blasted 2 homers, and four other Alleghenys OPSed 1.000 or better to eke out a real win.  I calculate the Allegheny’s Dominance Rating at 5.8.
.
Peshastin: W, 8 – (-1). (54 PA, .326, .446, .488; 1 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA). Ozzie Albies — I forgot to mention Ozzie Albies!  Dave discovered he had been named Ozhaino or something in the defense ratings, costing him a 0 rating at  second base, both in April and in May.  He’s been fixed in May, but can’t be fixed in April.  He took it out on the planet by going 3 for 3 with a double and a walk yesterday, leading the powerful Pears to big win, and a Dominance Rating of 4.3.
Kaline: W 2, L (-1); 11 – 1. (38 PA, .419, .438, .903; 9 ip, 0 er, 0.00 ERA). The Drive overswept a virtual doubleheader (winning 2 and erasing a loss) thanks to the masterful shutout pitching of Max Fried (7 ip) and three relievers.  Kris Bryant blasted three homers and a single in 6 trips to the plate while two other Drived OPSed over 2.000 (Wilmer Flores and Todd Frazier) and two more Drives OPSed 1.000 or better (Willy Adames and Orlando Arcia).  The Drive Dominance Rating stands at -0.4. So I guess their Dominated Rating is 0.4.
.
Haviland: “L”, 4 – 2. (35 PA, .233, .333, .267; 7.7 ip,. 2 er, 2.35 ERA).  Martin Perez turned in a 6.7 ip, 1 er gem to stifle the opposition, while Brandon Lowe led a lowly offense with his 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.  The Dragons have a Dominance Rating of – 20.
.
Bellingham: L, 6 – 8. (37 PA, .303, .378, .394; no pitching). Ronald Acuna — 3 for 4 with a double and a walk — was the highlight of the day for Cascade fans.  There was a time just a few days ago when the Cascades probably had a positive Dominance Rating.  But today the Cascade Dominance Rating is -20.
.
Cottage: L, 5 – 6. (40 PA, .243, .300, .405; 5.3 ip, 3 er, 5.06 ERA). Yonny Chirinos is back! This time with a nice 4.7 ip, 0 er outing, only partly undone by Jose Alvarado’s quadruple+ chulk: 0.7 ip, 3 er).  Alvarados number was a little too big for the Cheese offense, even though 5 Cheeses OPSed 1.000 or better.  Yoan was one of them (2 for 4, 1.000 OPS) but Yandy was not (0 for 5 – ouch!). Cheese Dominance Rating: -34.2.
.
Brookland W, 12 – 5. (35 PA, .516, .571, .903; 8 ip, 4 er, 4.50 ERA)  How far could the Outs have gone had Jordan Lyles’ masterful gem (7 ip, 1 er) been backed up by Lovelady and Moronta (combined scoreless inning) without Nick Anderson’s “help” ( o ip, 3 er).  Infinite chulks are killers. However, you can survive infinite chulks — at least small-ish ones — if you have seven batters OPSing OVER 1.000, and the other two OPSing identical respectable .833’s.  Out Dominance Rating: -56.1.
.
DC: W, 5 – 3. (44 PA, .263 .356, .368; 11 ip, 1 er, 0.92 ERA). Dylan Bundy and Adrian Sampson pretty much split those 11 innings down the middle, with only 1 run scoring.  The Balk’s Danny J, Jansen the catcher, led the offense going 2 for 4 with a homer and a walk. Balk Dominance Rating: -65.3
