John Completes Our Family

Born April 17, 1962, he was Mom's birthday present for the rest of her life.

This is the first picture we have of the four of us together. It was taken on John’s first birthday, in 1963. Sue and Peggy look distracted, but John and I recognized the importance of this event.

John is pictured here with Grandma and Grandad. This might be the only photo we have with both John and Grandad in it, since their lives did not overlap by very much.

The 1960’s brought us many happy times with our family and with the addition of John to our family in 1962 made us complete. John was born at the newest hospital in town, Presbyterian Intercommunity, on April 17, 1962 that also happened to be Doree’s 31st birthday. The two of them really enjoy sharing birthdays over the years, just as Aunt and I did. The new Dodger stadium had opened just 7 days before John was born and there was a telecast that day of the Dodger-Giant game that I was watching in the waiting room at the hospital. I was never allowed to be with Doree or in the delivery room at any of the births. I could only see her after she was back in her room. Anyway, John’s arrival occurred during the game, and I now had a second son. Maybe this is why John has always liked baseball so much. I knew now our family was complete with two boys and two girls, all healthy and smart; what more could a Dad ask for? I felt truly blessed and still do.

Mom and Dad show off their newest offspring on Mother’s Day 1963.

Grandma shows John how to feed the ducks at our favorite park in Monterey, California. Our family took a trip to Carmel and Monterey every couple of years when Dad went up that way to attend business meetings. We kids loved going up there, and this park was one of the reasons. Another was the family bingo games, which we played in the evenings. Grandma would wrap and bring all sorts of prizes to hand out to the winners of each round.

Upper left: Annie and Grandpa took this as one of a series of pictures of John in the back yard of our home on Davista. Of course this one became everyone’s favorite. I just wonder what they had to do to get that expression on his face.

Lower right: This was the birthday cake given to John on his first birthday. He was much more civilized in dealing with it than I had been with my first birthday cake. This photo was taken in the driveway of our home on Davista, looking out toward the street.
