TRAOTD #3:

Here are the minutes of Friday’s sessions in the EFL Mammal Summit between the Kangaroos and Wolverines:

Pre-Negotiation Phase:  Ryan made me walk the length of the mall to a museum still under construction (African American History Museum), and then all the way back up the mall (Native American History Museum), then a long tour of a mostly very depressing museum, then a good but over-priced supper.  On the way back he made me get off a stop early so he could “shop” but not buy anything.

Clearly the Captain Kangaroo was trying to wear down the old, physically and psychologically.  But I was onto him.  I bragged how all that walking had helped me accumulate 13,000 steps on the day.

Preliminary Negotiations/Board Game phase:  Ryan brought out two games I’ve never played, hoping to show how he can dominate the old man.  I won one of them, neutralizing his gambit.

Negotiation Phase:

Me:  Let me be in first.

Ryan: No.

Me:  But you have built a team that could compete every year for years, if you don’t go all in for this year.

Ryan:  (Long discourse on how sports are about winning, including being willing to sacrifice future chances to win to seize present opportunities to win.)

Me: (A few brief but cogent remarks, summarized as “I beg to differ.”)

This last part ended after midnight.

I know this doesn’t look good to the layman.  Ryan’s outright “no” seems so firm, followed by a passionate philosophy of  “win when you get the chance.”  But I can tell all this is for show. My successful parry of all of his preliminary maneuvers has clearly softened him up.

Canberra: W, 10 – 3. (.308, .364, .667;  6.3 ip 1 er)   The Captain Kangaroo’s demoralization doesn’t seem to have seeped all the way down to the actual Kangaroo roster. Yet. Note this line: awesome offense, fantastic pitching.  Bryce Harper’s not helping matters going 2 for 2 with a homer and two walks. Nor Byung-ho Park with his two homers, nor Yonder Alonso at 3 for 4, nor Martin Perez who did all that pitching.  I may have to go to a Kangaroos game in person to do something about all this overperformance before it undoes all the good work I accomplished yesterday.
Old Detroit: L, 7 – 11. (.331, .381, .615; 10.7 ip, 11 er.)  The offense matched the ‘Roos, essentially, although to lesser result, somehow.  But Francisco Liriano’s near chulk (4.7 ip, 8 er) is also not helping matters any.  Not a great time for that, nor for Machado’s 0 for 4. The ‘Roos gained 1.2 games on the W’s yesterday.
Haviland: W, 5 – 5.  (.240, .309, .400;  2.3 ip, 2 er).  The hitting was mediocre — and it was massive: 55 plate appearances! The pitching was worse, but at least it was only 2.3 ip. Miguel Sano’s homer and single in 5 ABs was the highlight of the day for the Dragons.
Pittsburgh: W, 8 – 7. (.325, .413, .525 — Happy EMD!;  6 ip, 5 er).  Which two Alleghenys led the Pittsburgh attack?  Mike Trout? He was good (1 for 3 with a double and two walks, 1.267 OPS, and scoring the tying run in last night’s Mariners’ loss).  But no. Domingo Santana, the hot rookie? 2 for three with a walk, 1.417 OPS)?  No. The two top Allegheny peaks were:  Jose Altuve (3 for 4 with a double and a walk, 1.800 OPS) and Aledmys Diaz (2 for 4 with a double and a homer, 2.000 OPS).  Of course.
Portland: W, 3 – (-1). ( .268, .354, .390; 22.7 ip, 4 er).  Chris Iannetta carried the Rosebuds, going 2 for 3 with two walks. Or maybe Chris Sale (9 ip, 1 er).  It was someone named “Chris” at any rate.
Flint Hill: W, 7 – 2. (.296, .444, .481; 8 ip, 1 er).  Jeff Samardzija came very close to imitating Chris Sale with that 8 ip, 1 er line.  Marcus Semien  went 2 for 3 with a homer and a walk to support Samardzija.
Peshastin:  L, 3 – 6. (.265, .359, .412; 15 ip, 9 er).  The Pears just can’t seem to get firing on all cylinders, or whatever that would be in Pear culture. Trevor Story went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and a walk, but the team was weighted down with some many 0-fers i didn’t salvage the situation.  Especially not when Nick Tropeano’s 2 er in 5 ip was the highlight of the Pear’s pitching performance.
Kaline: L, 3 – 10. (.283, .327, .391; 1.7 ip, 3 er.) Hunter Cervenka contributed a nonuple chulk (0.3 ip, 3 er).  Chris Owings went 3 for 3, all singles.  That’s the range of experience for Drive fans, yesterday, from perfectly awful to just perfect.
Cottage: L, 1 – 8.  (.182, .234, .318;  4.7 ip,  7 er)  Luis Severino said “goodbye for now” to the big leagues with a 2.7 ip, 7 er chulk, sealing the Cheesy fate for the day. Yasiel Puig tried to redeem things with a 3 for 5 day topped off by a homer, but it wasn’t enough.
D.C.:  0 – 8. (.125, .192, .208; 9.7 ip, 8 er)  Josh Tomlin left the mound after 6.3 innings with the Balk in reasonably good shape (3 er). But the bevy of Balk relievers didn’t shut things down like they normally do, allowing 5 earned runs in 3.3 ip.
