“There isn’t going to be another out.”

I am writing to you on Sunday morning from Seattle, where last evening (Saturday) Ben, my daughter Melissa, my grandson Enzo and I joined the King’s Court, trying to coax one more good game out of Felix Hernandez.

When Enzo heard Felix would be pitching, he broke my heart. “Not him!” Enzo moaned. “He’s old. I want to see someone good, like that big guy with freckles who pitched last time.”

I don’t know who the big guy with freckles is.  But to see my own kin not realize the value in hailing and farewelling King Felix… I knew we had some work to do.

Just as we came up the stairs from the entrance at the corner of Edgar and Dave, a ceremony was beginning on the field. Edgar Martinez and Ken Griffey, Jr. were being introduced to the crowd.  As we made our way to our seats, a Mariners official read a citation lauding Ichiro Suzuki.  As we took our seats — Enzo sitting next to the field, a row in front of and four feet outside of the foul pole in left — Ichiro was reading a very nice response.

A veteran of the King’s Court, sitting in front of us, told us how to get our free yellow King’s Court shirts.  Enzo’s was way too big for him, but he wore it happily.

Enzo was thrilled to get to see Edgar in person. He appreciated seeing Griffey and Ichiro, too.  Now if only he could see why we call Felix Hernandez the King, the fourth-greatest True Mariner (since Randy Johnson and Alex Rodriguez betrayed us).

And Felix came through.  He didn’t dominate like the old days, but he kept the White Sox off the board.  Wolverine Eloy Jimenez was his first strikeout to lead off the second inning. Twice more Jimenez went out meekly to Felix. For seven innings, Felix bobbed and weaved and kept the Sox off the board.  In the sixth he loaded the bases with one out.  The Sox scored when the M’s couldn’t quite turn a slow grounder to second into a double play. But that was all they could manage against the King.

Felix left the game after seven innings, tied 1 – 1. (Hot Sox prospect and ex-Wolverine Dylan Cease had shut down the M’s, except for Shed Long’s wall-scraping homer.) Neither team scored in the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Eloy Jimenez singled, and went to second and third on successive wild pitches. But the M’s stranded him there.

It was getting late for Enzo, so we agreed we’d stay for the 10th, but that would be it.

The White Sox went quietly in the 10th.

After two even meeker outs in the bottom of the inning, Melissa began packing up. “Are we leaving?” asked Enzo.

“Yes, after this next out,” she replied.

“There isn’t going to be another out,” I said quietly.

“What did Grandpa say?” asked Enzo.

“He doesn’t think there are going to be any more outs,” explained Melissa. “He thinks this batter is going to hit a home run.”

I started to say, “or at least a single, so Vogelbach can hit a homer” when Omar Narvaez drove a ball high high high to right. The crowd gasped, then roared.  The Sox right fielder went back to the wall, waited, waited, and timed his leap.

The leap came up short.

The ball hit right on top of the wall, bounced high in the air, and came down into the center fielder’s glove.  Narvaez stopped at second, but the umpire, well out in right center field, was signaling for a home run.  The crowd roared even louder as Narvaez finished his circuit of the bases, but I told Melissa “Wait. The Sox will demand a review.”

But the Sox didn’t ask for a review.  The call stood.  There were no more outs.

Felix didn’t get the win, but he got a yellow-shirted fan who will turn 8 in November. Old enough to remember for the rest of the century the night King Felix pitched a gem and the M’s won when his Grandpa promised a miracle.

Portland: “W” , 4 – 4.  (48 PA, .229, .229, .375; 10.7 ip,, 3 er, 2.53 ERA).
Fourty-eight plate appearances leading to 38 outs without a walk.  But the pitchers imposed nearly as much on the Rosebud’s opponents. This is not really championships-level play, but the Rosebuds are getting close to the point where they can coast right on out.
.
Flint Hill: W, 2 – 1. (51 PA, .283, .353, .413; 17.7 ip, 5 er, 2.55 ERA)
The ‘Buds are getting close to the coasting point, but there is one team left with to make then honest.  And Saturday they crept even closer, with a solid offense and a pitching performance as good as Portland’s. Jose Abreu didn’t do much against Felix and the Mariners (1 for 4).
.
Old Detroit: L, 1 – 7. (55 PA, .146, .255, .229;  11.3 ip, 6 er, 4.76 ERA).
Nick Ahmed was the only Diamonback baserunner in Arizona’s game against the Reds, but his triple (followed by a sacrifice fly) was all the D’backs needed to win, 1 – 0.  According to MLB, it was the only time in a 9-run game a team had won with only one baserunner since at least 1901.  Unfortunately, Ahmed’s triple was nowhere near enough for the Wolverines.  Their line was way better than the D’backs’ 0.042, .042, .125, but the one run was not enough with the W’s spotty pitching. So frustrating… but, you know, I did call a miracle finish at what could be a crucial nexus in my grandson’s life.  Put that together with our trip to Cooperstown: would I trade them for the 2019 EFL championship?  Of course not. And besides, there’s always next year.
.
Pittsburgh: “W”, 9 – 15. (30 PA, .217, .367, .435;  3 ip. 2 er, 6.00 ERA).
Pittsburgh blew a chance to gain on the Woeverines, and maybe get some buffer against the unrushing Pears.  A string of relievers had their work marred by Shaun Anderson’s sextuple chulke: 2 ER in only 0.33 IP.  The Pears are now only 0.3 games out of fourth place.
.
Peshastin: “W”, 7 – 8. (49 PA, .378, .408, .511 — Happy Edgar Martinez Day; 6.3 ip, 5 er, 7.11 ERA).
The Pears could be in fourth place already with all that hitting — five of twelve hitters OPSed better than 1.000, and only Juan Soto failed to reach base — except Julio Urias sextuple chulked (0.3 ip, 2 er).
.
Haviland: W, 9 – 3. (39 PA, .343, .410, .452; 6 ip, 2 er, 3.00 ERA)
A nice day to be a Dragon fan with good hitting and pitching. Tyler Glasnow led with 3 scoreless innings, as did Miguel Sano with a single, a walk, and a grand slam in 7 trips.
.
Canberra: “W”, 6 – 7. (45 PA, .341, .400, .610; no pitching).
The Kangaroo project of passing the Dragons hit a bump Saturday. Not so much on the hitting side, where Kyle Tucker had four singles and a walk in 5 trips — plus two stolen bases). But the K’s couldn’t afford the lack of pitching.
.
Kaline: W, 10 – 5.  (51 PA, .390, .510, .683; 2 ip, 1 er, 4.50 ERA).
With a monster offensive day — six players OPSing over 1.000, including Kris Bryant OPSing 3.000 at 3 for 3 with a homer and a HBP, and Travis Demeritte also reaching 3.000 with a pinch-hit double.
.
Cottage: L, 3 – 8. (42 PA, .235, .235, .471; 7 ip, 6 er, 7.71 ERA)
Mike Ford’s pinch hit homer probably gave Cheese fans the world over a charge of elation.  And Dylan Cease pitched Felix to a draw over 5 innings, unbroken until Narvaez’ mystical 10th inning homer.   But those two highlights weren’t enough for a win at the Cottage.
.
Bellingham: W 0, L 2; 5 – 19. (23 PA, .190, .217, .286;  1.7 ip, 3 er, 16.20 ERA)
Rajai Davis made headlines for his pinch hit 3-RBI game winning hit for the Mets — but its effects didn’t stretch nearly far enough to help the Cascades avoid a double-header sweep.
.
Brookland: W, 5 – 1. (22 PA, .316, .409, .526 — another Edgar Day!; 10 ip, 3 er, 2.70 ERA)
They’ve done this before, the Outs:  put up enviable numbers but not in enough volume to fend off replacements.  The pitchers put in the time, but the batter came up about 30% short.
.
DC: W, 6 – 0. (41 PA, .212, .341, .333;  9.3 ip, 2 er, 1.93 ERA)
Mike Clevinger pitched an 8 ip, 2 er gem (10 Ks, 1 bb, 1 hr), leading a strong Balkan victory. Nick Markakis led from the offensive side (4 singles in 5 AB).
