A Front Seat to a Free Clinic

This was going to be longer and arrive to you sooner, but with my recent promotion I have been given more work. Who knew that was thing? Anyway, there isn’t much to report since the Wolverines are putting on a free clinic in terms of how to blow the competition away with 7 weeks to spare. I’ve already begun etching their name into the trophy…

Old Detroit: W, 2-1; 52PA, 9IP
AVG: 0.224 OBP: 0.269 SLG: 0.306 OPS: 0.575
ERA: 3.00 WHIP: 1.111
The way Old Detroit has been methodically distancing itself from the rest of the league this month has been quite impressive. Even on a day when the offense was just ok, the pitching showed up to say that there is nothing anyone can do to rip the EFL title away from the Wolverines, even though there are still 7 weeks left in the season. For instance, only JP Crawford and Austin Riley had more than one hit yesterday (they each had two), and the entire team only had two extra base hits – a homerun from Riley (he’s having a pretty great season!) and a double from Crawford. But the pitching was solid, with 9 total innings combined from Marcus Stroman and Jonathan Loaisiga, and only 3 total runs allowed. On a day when the Wolverines only scored 2 runs, they only gave up 1. And their lead increased again, giving OD an unfair share of hope during these dog days of the season.

Flint Hill: W, 6-4; 48PA, 12.3IP
AVG: 0.256 OBP: 0.333 SLG: 0.395 OPS: 0.729
ERA: 5.12 WHIP: 1.301
Last night Teoscar Hernandez continued his tear this month, going 2 for 4 with a homerun. Tim Anderson added a triple and Reese McGuire a double. But even with a win, Flint Hill lost ground to OD, and at this point needs to game one game per week on a team that seemingly can do no wrong. It doesn’t look hopeful.

Peshastin: W, 5-1; 41PA, 6.3IP
AVG: 0.212 OBP: 0.317 SLG: 0.455 OPS: 0.772
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 0.635
The Pears got excellent pitching from Huascar Ynoa, who pitched 6.3 scoreless innings. No single hitter got more than one hit, but enough of them got a hit (7) and enough home runs (Zunino and Adell) to pull out a convincing win.

DC: L, 2-7; 51PA, 1.7IP
AVG: 0.152 OBP: 0.235 SLG: 0.283 OPS: 0.518
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 1.176
The Balk hitter were more more like the swing and missers, racking up 14 strikeouts to dwarf their 7 hits. Bryce Harper and Pete Alonso homered, but the Balk did not pull out a win.

Kaline: L, 3-9; 48PA, 6.3IP
AVG: 0.238 OBP: 0.333 SLG: 0.310 OPS: 0.643
ERA: 8.57 WHIP: 1.587
The Drive got 10 hits, including 3 total doubles in addition to 6 walks. Willy Adames, who one MLB writer hinted could be a sleeper MVP candidate this year, went 2 for 4 with a walk. But the pitching was bad, too bad for the hitters to overcome.

Haviland: “W,” 6-8; 39PA, 3.3IP
AVG: 0.316 OBP: 0.333 SLG: 0.447 OPS: 0.781
ERA: 5.45 WHIP: 1.212
The Dragons had 5 hitters collect 2 hits apiece, which helped them score 6 runs, usually enough to win a game. Jake Cronenworth hit a home run, and the Brenden/Brandon duo (Rodgers and Lowe) each collected a double. But the pitching was not good nor was it plentiful, and thus, Haviland lost.

Cottage: L, 3-13; 52PA, 4IP
AVG: 0.213 OBP: 0.288 SLG: 0.255 OPS: 0.544
ERA: 13.50 WHIP: 2.000
The Cheese pitchers collected runs as though they were going out of stock, with Alek Manoah surrendering 6 in 3 innings and some replacement pitchers adding the rest. Good thing Randy Arozarena showed up to hit, collecting 4 of the Cheese’s 10 hits.

Pittsburgh: W, 4-3; 23PA, 21.6IP
AVG: 0.273 OBP: 0.304 SLG: 0.409 OPS: 0.713
ERA: 3.75 WHIP: 1.389
Pittsburgh had an incredible amount of innings pitched and they were all good innings. The best pitchers were Logan Webb and Vlad Gr., who combined for over 13 innings and 4 runs. Christian Vazquez went 2 for 3 with a home runs against the stinkin’ Yankees, who beat the Red Sox twice yesterday.

Canberra: W, 7-4; 28PA, 7IP
AVG: 0.304 OBP: 0.393 SLG: 0.478 OPS: 0.871
ERA: 2.57 WHIP: 1.286
The Kangaroos won easily, buoyed by the hope of a Mike Trout return this month. Four pitchers combined for 2 runs over 7 innings, and Vlad Jr. went 2 for 3 with 2 walks.

Bellingham: “L,” 4-3; 29PA, 1IP
AVG: 0.286 OBP: 0.310 SLG: 0.321 OPS: 0.632
ERA: 0.00 WHIP: 1.000
The Cascades outscored their opponents, getting 3 hits from DJLM and two from Jorge Polanco. But it wasn’t enough to convince the database to give them a win.

Portland: L, 4-5; 22PA, 6.7IP
AVG: 0.200 OBP: 0.273 SLG: 0.450 OPS: 0.723
ERA: 4.03 WHIP: 1.045
The Rosebuds did not perform better than OD yesterday, losing a close game 4-5. Only CJ Cron and Corey Seager got any hits – 2 doubles for Seager and a home run for Cron.
