League Updates

Surprise Bonus Update!

There was a  teensy weensy mistake in yesterday’s standings.

I may be incompetent, but it’s a brilliant kind of incompetence: we get a bonus EFL update on a day we would otherwise only have home run derby results to savor.

Haviland: W 1, L (-1), 9 – 0. (8 AB, .400, .516, 800).  One of the nanoscopic errors was leaving Scooter Gennett off the Dragons’ BP roster. I left that step out in processing the Gennett for Clevinger trade: DC got Clevinger and lost Gennett, but Haviland hadn’t gotten Gennett.  But, really, who cares? Who’d miss the offense of one of those silly little middle infielders?
.
Speaking of Home Run Derby results — I paid no attention to the Home Run Derby. It’s boring.  But maybe they watched in Haviland since the Dragons had two participants:  Gary Sanchez and Miguel Sano.  Sano defeated Sanchez in the second round to win the Haviland Home Run Derby,
.
Flint Hill, etc.: No changes (except falling 0.3 games further behind first place).
I made another mistake, too:  I failed to process any part of Flint Hill’s trade of Anthony Zych to the Pears for Yasmany Grandal.  But this mistake didn’t hurt anything. Dave’s database wasn’t fooled — it counted Grandal’s stats for the Tornados, and Zych’s for the Pears.
.
Pittsburgh:  Cody Bellinger lost to Aaron Judge in the second round of the Home Run Derby.
.
Kaline:  Aar0n Judge won the Home Run Derby.
.
The All-Star Game is tonight. Should I watch?
Here are the EFLers in the All-Star Game. Those in the starting lineup are in bold.
Haviland: Zack Cozart, Gary Sanchez, Miguel Sano, Ervin Santana, Jake Lamb, Carlos Martinez
Flint Hill:  Daniel Murphy, Robbie Ray, Brad Hand, Corey Knebel
Cottage:  Bryce Harper, Chris Archer, Luis Severino, Corey Seager
Pittsburgh:  Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley, Cody Bellinger, Ender Inciarte, Stephen Strasburg
Portland:  Mookie Betts, Carlos Correa, Corey Dickerson,  Chris Sale, Paul Goldschmidt
Kaline:  Aaron Judge, Yonder Alonso
Peshastin: Max Scherzer, Corey Kluber
Old Detroit: Alex Wood. Only one All-Star? That’s bulletin board material.
Canberra: Dellin Betances, Michael Conforto
DC:  … Huh.  I thought every team was supposed to have a player in the All-Star Game. More incompetence!  Not by me, this time — by my junior counterpart, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.  And there’s no compensating benefit: no extra update, no entertaining mea culpa, not even an apology to Balk fans the world over.
.
So, will I watch?  I don’t know.  The EFL has 10 of the 20 starters, when our “share” would be more like 7.  We have 21 of the 49 reserves, six more that our “share.”  That’s fun.  But, this is an all-time low for Wolverines in the All-Star Game.  And the Balk got snubbed entirely.
.
That last point rankles. In solidarity with the Balk, I  think I’ll find something else to do.

  • Wow. Way to smash my heart into tiny pieces. This is the kind of mistake that either fuels a second half run for the ages or a colossal melt.

  • I vote for the colossal melt. And isn’t it wonderfully ironic that it is Gennett who provided the boost!

  • I vote for the second half run for the ages. How about from 17 games back on July 1?

  • So, let’s say Haviland goes .500 the rest of the season. To tie him you’d have to go .712 over the course of 73 games. Has any team EFL or MLB ever done that? That would be epic. If Haviland/Flint Hill continue to win at the Sam clip you’d have to have to win 50 games (.822) to tie. That would be the type of streak we should name a trophy after. And Cottage has Trout returning after the break, and Pittsburgh forgot how to lose before the break. Second half should be fun!
